A 15-year old sophomore was killed by a line drive this past week.

It happened a few hours from me, but in an area that I work tournaments in over the summer.

Coroner's report released in Chrisman student baseball accident

CHRISMAN — An autopsy of a Chrisman High School student determined that his death was caused by blunt-force trauma from being hit in the head by a line-drive baseball during practice.

The Peoria County Coroner’s Office said Bentley Wolfe, 15, was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria a day after he was hit.

“Despite aggressive care and treatment, sadly, Bentley was pronounced brain dead” at 5:49 p.m. Friday,” the coroner’s office said. “Autopsy on Bentley demonstrates that he suffered detrimental head trauma due to blunt-force trauma.”

The high school hosted a prayer vigil Friday for Bentley, who played baseball and basketball and was active in the school’s FFA chapter.

Wow, that’s awful. I can’t imagine how the hitter must feel, to say nothing of this young man's family.

I often wonder if these new bats should be more regulated, since they keep getting designed to hit balls farther and faster. To be clear, I’m not blaming anyone, but it’s something I think about. I’m sure this tragedy will bring more attention to the issue.

It is sad when something like this happens, but it is a reality of the game. We all have seen close calls where someone managed to get their glove up in time or they were missed by just enough to avoid getting hit.

I am going to be tasteful and not post a picture of a greyhound.  But not tasteful enough that I didn't mention it.

I'm cynical . . . it won't.  The most I hope for is it brings awareness to coaches and players that the game is fun, but on the field we need to pay attention at all times.

This is the second such death that I personally know of.  When I was a kid (mid-1980s), a neighbor of my grandma was killed when he was hit in the chest with a line drive playing baseball in his yard.  He was even younger (I want to say under 10, but I don't recall exactly).
