R3 misses 1B, he takes three steps towards the dug out but the he notices his error and tries to go towards HP but after three steps he goes 4feet backward, what is the call?

I mean what is the basepath in this case? Can he go only towards the base, no more than 3ft to the left and to the right but could he go backward from home plate?

But if no one tries a tag attempt, could he go wherever he want to go?

If the 2B fielder begin to move towards him, is the runner who missed the base costrained in basepath although the fielder is fare away from him?
