R3 catcher tries a snap throw to third but the throw hits BR in the box, ball goes out of play off BR. Clearly not batters interference but since the ball went out of play R3 was awarded home. Is this correct? I can't find any reason why it wouldn't be correct but I'm just not clear on it.

A throw went out of play.  Two base award.  It doesn't matter that the throw hit an offensive player.

looking over the obvious.

That’s because you’re looking at it from “outside the fence”. Now, if you’re a coach, you can be excused, because even professional coaches don’t know (all) the rules (and their applications). However, if you’re an umpire, you need to look at and administer this from “inside the fence”. What does the rule say? Go with that.

Don’t go by what fellow coaches say…

… or the fans in the stands…

… or Facebook…

… or *shudder* Tic-Tok.
