Is there a standard signal that umpires use to alert each other to an IFF situation?

I have used a fist or finger to the forehead but now I am told that it is obsolete.

‘Ditto for the brush off signal when it is no longer in effect—-or is that still being used?

Signals are what is common in your organization or area. We still use the hand on chest. Some guys do the finger/fist to hat. It doesn’t matter as long as you and your partner are on the same page.
Personally, I only use the wipe off if it happens during an AB.

Our association does the fist or index finger to brim of cap, based on outs, like you. Then stacked fists with top hand pointing to third meaning "plate's got third if he tags", when 3rd base is unoccupied. Point straight down otherwise (i.e. bases loaded), meaning I'm staying home.

I have always felt a strong connection between signals, signals in synch with my crew and being mentally prepared for the next play. It's like launching a rocket and we're going through the pre-flight checklist.

I know a lot of guys say the wipe off signal after an IFF situation has been terminated is a [insert demeaning phrase here] move. I still do it...funny, I haven't missed an IFF or called an IFF incorrectly since I was kid. Coincidence?

Don't come to southern Oregon. We wipe the crap out of the IFF. 

After reading responses here, I get the desire to cut down on signaling and, if you're working with guys you know, its superfluous. 

But for new guys and because of the ways its taught here, we all do it.

The only time over-communicating is bad is if it's bad or wrong information (which doesn't meet the definition of communicating) or you are communicating at a time when the recipient of your intended communication is unable or unwilling to receive the information.

Oregon sounds like my kind of country!
