This is what you should have to listen to and let slide right off your back or you are not a real future HOF umpire.

That, followed by &&&&& is perfectly okay.

You followed by &&&& is also no worse now.

Personal or non personal does not matter.

Of course Sandy Alderson and many others would agree, that you just have to man up and take it. Any notes from the big shots that Mr. All World and next Babe Ruth here or his manager butt wipe is totally wrong???Not one word yet to dispel that being personal is not all right. Show me an article or something from MLB front office or team front office admonishing the players incorrect analysis.

Yep. Unreal that somehow this is justified as something that shouldn't be ejectable. 

If it ever got back to me that somebody said something like that about me and I didn't hear it, but my partner did and he didn't do anything about it, I'd have to seriously think if I'd work with him again.

I think the problem could be consistency...if what Benintendi says is true (and I have no idea if it is or not) and "you suck" is uttered (more) commonly, it would indeed by surprising when you get ejected when the last 37 times you've heard a player say it nothing happened.  It doesn't justify it nor make it right, but sometimes expectations are all we have.

The other thing is, when you're muttering something under your breath your intent is for nobody to hear...you're expressing frustration, and maybe you really do think the ump sucks...and you want to say the ump sucks, but you don't want anyone to hear it...saying it to yourself just makes you feel like you've accomplished something...but sometimes those mutters are louder than you intended.   C'est la vie.

 

The only thing I would want for the umpire is to be really sure he's directing "you suck" at an umpire and not himself.

Yes. Because that will be the rebuttal. "He was saying that to himself. He just x,y,z...he was mad at himself"

And it does happen - I don't know what percentage, but I know I used to do it a lot...if I swung at a bad pitch, or hit the perfect pitch exactly 14 inches..."you're an idiot" "suck less" "stop being a tool"...and many times, louder than a mutter.

But yes, it can also become a convenient excuse or defense to disguise the real intent - but at that level, it's pretty childish...if want to call the umpire an idiot, do it and own it...including the consequences.

Agree with that.  But let's face it:  we're talking about a field of young men that have, by and large, gone through life playing a game for a living.  So the "childish route" doesn't seem all that surprising when it's chosen.
