Right Call?

Hime Plate umpire ruled the other day that "a runner can advance on a ball that is fouled into the catcher’s mitt and then bounds away to the backstop" IS THIS CORRECT?

A foul is a dead ball. He may be confusing this situation with a foul tip, which is caught by the catcher. A foul tip remains a live ball.

I believe the rule is the same for all codes.

The only way that is possible is if he felt the catcher did have control long enough and the ball coming out was NOT due to the batter hitting it. I don't see how that is possible if it still went to the backstop.

If it stopped at his feet, I could understand that ruling(provided I saw the catcher hold onto the ball and NOT it hits his mitt and falls at his feet) but I would still have a hard time believing or selling the ruling. Everyone heard the tip and saw the catcher miss it.

So, it will be assumed to be a foul ball and I would be inclined to call it a foul ball if it hits the ground at all to save a headache unless the catcher dropped it while trying to throw. If he drops it on the throw, then oh well for the catcher.
