OBS Award - FED

I'm sure this has been on here before but couldn't find much in the search with the number of OBS topics that are on the site.

R1, batter hits a ball to the gap and R1 has to make sure it's not caught so he's not running hard until the ball hits the ground.  R1 is held up at third and the BR rounds second hard but has to throw on the brakes since the runner in front of him stopped.  Throw from the outfield is cut off and the defense has an opportunity to throw out the BR coming back to second.  In going back to the base, the BR is obstructed by the F6.  FED rules say the minimum award is one base, but in order to do that you'd have to award the lead runner home as well.  Is this a situation where you would not award a minimum of one base?

Agree with Ives. Same in all codes: this would be Type I or A in OBR and NCAA, which also has a minimum 1 base award. Minimum awards force preceding runners to advance.

Which reminds me of one of the greatest myths about OBS awards entitled, "If he goes, HE goes too."

This is when the LEAD runner is obstructed, and an ignorant base coach expects you to award the trailing runner at least one base as well.

Here's the OBR rule (emphasis added):

( h) (7.06)

Obstruction

When obstruction occurs, the umpire shall call or signal

“Obstruction.”

(1) If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the

batter-runner is obstructed before he touches first base,

the ball is dead and all runners shall advance, without lia-

bility to be put out, to the bases they would have reached,

in the umpire’s judgment, if there had been no obstruc-

tion. The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one

base beyond the base he had last legally touched before

the obstruction. Any preceding runners, forced to

advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruc-

tion, shall advance without liability to be put out.
