First, I'm no fan of the zero communication rule. We had a case where a local tyrant actually ejected a manager for talking to his grandmother a full 1/2 hour before a game. It's just stupid how some local folks take this waaaaaaay too far.

Why is that umpire on the field 1/2 hour before the game anyhow? And the umpire technically does not take control of the field until game time and the lineups are exchanged. Yes we are on the field prior to inspect equipment and what not but 1/2 hour? If I see a SAFETY violation I will address it such as no dangler on a catchers mask or a player catching for a coach hitting infield without a helmet because those are LL safety issues.

We enforce the no communication rule during the game... prior? Why would I care... the players and coaches are not restricted to the confines of the field during warm up/prep time so where would my authority come from? Sorry Johnny your removed from the game for giving your Grand Mother a hug 45 minutes pre-game. Might as well pack the family up and head home now :-)

Dumb... just dumb.

Also during tournament time the TD supplies the scorekeeper. That is the only official SK for the game... All changes, pitch counts etc go though this person. Any other SK working for either team is not an 'official' and should not be communicating with the on field personnel.

He's supposed to be coaching, not being tied up with a book.

Not my problem as the umpire under LL rules. You want to keep score as a coach so that you know what is happening that is on you... if not ask for time and go ask the official SK your question. Communicate with your 'team' SK who is not an official today and you run the risk of watching the game from the inside of your vehicle in the parking lot.
