Well he spends a lot of time posting to this umpire message board I assumed he wore 2 hats, My mistake

He does wear two hats...an umpire thorn-in-the-side on defense hat and an umpire thorn-in-the-side on offense hat.

We have one coach trying to stir the pot. He would argue either side depending whether he was on offense or defense.

.

Nope. We need consistent rulings. Heard that on before I bet.

you would be wrong, and is is still an IFF at the High School or above level every time.

So none of you have ever watched MLB fielders run amok under a fly ball on a windy day? You must lead sheltered lives.

Still doesn't prevent it from being judged to be an IFF.

Why do you think it is ordinary effort? I keep reading that a key criteria is being able to settle under the ball. That's not happening here.

Settling doesn't have to be stationary.  The fielder has a bead on it.  I am not protecting the fielder.  I am protecting the base runners.

He doesn't have a bead on it. That's why he's running amok.

Couple of thoughts:

(1)  As they state at umpire school/MiLBUD camp: an umpire CANNOT consider a "high sky" (i.e. a bright sun) in determining whether or not a fly meets the criteria of an infield fly, but he CAN (and must, if applicable) consider the wind.

(2)  If I am the home plate umpire in a professional game that had this exact play, I would be calling for an infield fly at the 8-second mark of the video (when F5 brings his hand and glove together).  To me he was showing that he had a beat on the fly ball...and was using ordinary effort.  I am trained to glance at the ball and watch the fielder; in watching the fielder he indicated, to me, that he was going to catch it with ordinary effort.  I can't wait until the ball is on the ground (or a split second before)...which is the moment when I would be able to realize that the fielder misplayed the ball (whether due to the wind or not, we can't tell because we don't see the ball in the video)...to make the "infield fly" call.  If you don't call it in this situation, the defense turns an easy double play and you have a sh!thouse...especially on the pro level.

Do you argue with umpires on the field this way, too? It's the ruling. We're moving on.

Sure we have, but what should the MLB umpire do, not call IFF and let the defense get a cheap DP or give the fielder the benefit of the doubt that he can catch a wind driven fly ball. call IFF, and prevent the $#!+storm that the cheap DP will create. Its a no-brainer.

It's a guideline, not an absolute.  The farther the fielder needs to run, and especially if he moves "backwards", and the lower the bball, the more the guideline comes into play.  Here, it's a very minor point - -the fielder was moving in and the ball was high.
