I am in C for a put out at first to end the inning. All players leave the field and coach comes out to ask me to get help from my partner. We got together and my partner tells me and the coach that he saw him pull his foot but it was too late now for an "appeal" because all the players have left the field. I'm trying to find rule/rules that cover this situation and find that indeed this is not an official "appeal" but just a "get help from partner situation."

I'd like to feel more sure about this situation the next time it happens. Once the players have left the field, is there any recourse to this situation?

This is not an appeal governed by FED 8-2-6 or the OBR equivalent. It's more like appealing a check swing, and it has nothing to do with when the fielders leave the field. The time frame for fixing it is the next pitch, so fix it, bring the fielders back out, and play on.

Ask your partner, why would fixing an umpire mistake that would benefit the offense be contingent on the defense staying on the field. That makes no sense.

The missed base/miss retouch appeals are benefits to the defense so the defense has to stay on the field, by rule.

Not until they become the defense and make the next pitch.

What rule wold you apply that makes the offense leaving the field relevant ?
Perhaps you should review OBR 5.09(c).

The rule book (unfortunately) uses the term "appeal" in the missed base/retouch context and the reverse an incorrect call context. The former has a defense staying field criteria...the latter has no criteria for any players staying on the field.

Couldn't abandonment come into play here?

Not when it was an umpire's decision that made the runner leave the base in the first place. Rectify the situation.

Would you really penalize a runner for abandoning a base when the umpire mistakenly ruled that the 3rd out was made ? That would take big balls and no sense of justice.

First problem in this conversation is this line: " We got together and my partner tells me and the coach"

Coach I will get with my partner and see if he has any information. I need you to go back to your dug out now...

This step eliminates a lot of other issues. You and your partner should not be having discussions in front of the coaches other than a check swing appeal.  Once a play is over get together on your own and have your chat away from prying ears.

Other than that... as stated above: Fix it. Especially since the coach is privy to your conversation, fix it, fix it, fix it.
