Anybody have access to the 2016 NCAA Umpire Clinic Videos?

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 3806 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Are you part of Triple Play Umpires?

I am. This will be my second year with a schedule of games from TPU. The calls are not bad. Some of it is very basic, while other parts of the calls are extremely helpful. The basic part baffles me, but some guys must not take care of their business so stuff gets brought up. I like the organization. The clinics are great. TPU does some things differently than other orgs, but they have success. Two guys went to Cary for the D2 WS last year. One guy going this year.

@BT_Blue Negative Ghost Rider, when we asked about different locations last weekend.  They said that the committee is content with the current rotation.  That these three areas have the most competitive flight options.  And reaches the majority of their target audience.  So like I said it doesn't look good for the NorthWest.  I was hoping they would do an SD run at some point but they're liking OC for the time being.  Maybe after the last rotation in phoenix in 2018 but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Our assigner only requires his clinic for the season and our conference play-offs, but to do regional or above (for any level), the NCAA conference is mandatory and membership to NCAA Arbitor. The assignor clinic covers all of our conferences, Cape League and NECBL for the summer.

We all belong to Arbitor, and are assigned through that, but if we are staying within our conferences, then only the assignors clinic is required. These can be gained at a couple of National Conferences or one that he puts on.

The same stuff gets covered as the National Clinic, but in a much shorter time. I have been to both, and the assignor clinic is much more to the point.

The cost is always unreasonable for some -- especially those who give up games in other sports to attend.  And, imo, most of the time they cram about 30 minutes worth of information into an 8 hour day.

They should give credit for just watching the videos - -they know how to track that on-line -- that's 95% of the value of the clinic.

I agree that it can be expensive. That being said, the substance of the clinic is only part of the benefit of being there, and even that is better than watching videos online. There's the chance to have something clarified if you don't understand, there's the opportunity to hear what the intents and emphases are for these new enforcements, and most importantly, the ability to hear what the line is between rule and judgement (there were a few on the aforementioned plays at the plate where they would talk about the elements of the rule, but different speakers had different opinions on whether those elements were met.)

Perhaps more importantly for a newer umpire, the clinic offers an opportunity to network. As in anything else, when you begin, you don't know what you don't know. Likewise, you won't know who you should talk to to get seen in your area. In the informal networking, you're putting your face and name out there, especially if you have others in your area attending. Then their network attaches to you, and now you have more opportunities. In addition, the chance to have very good umpires and supervisors/advisers at least know who you are is huge. I shared an elevator ride with one of last year's CWS umpires, and shot the SH*# a little. Will that help me down the road? Who knows, but it couldn't hurt.

If you treat the clinic as an investment just like others, and make it an integrated part of your offseason plan with other advanced clinics, you will develop those relationships that can help. These clinics have high-level assigners, advisers, and national staff in attendance. If those guys who have some pull see you repeatedly, they might not know your name, but they at least will have a small amount of familiarity with you so when your name does come up for advancement, the light bulb will come on. The more you attend both this clinic and skills clinics, the earlier you will have established a name for yourself, too. Getting evaluated by one of these knowledgeable people in September and having a beer while picking their brain in January...you get the picture.

I agree that the clinic has some benefits.  Never said it didn't.  But those benefits will vary by person.  So, I'm not against having the clinics -- I'm against ONLY having the clinics (to meet the requirement).

From the NCAA's standpoint, the clinics are to get us all on the same page regarding rules (and interpretations) and mechanics and game management.  They don't (or shouldn't) care about the networking stuff --

And, I've gone every year except one since, well, almost forever.

I disagree 100%. This networking is the only way, under the current system, to get umpires to the levels of their talent. There is no PBUC-like system where the NCAA controls umpire training and placement. There was an implication as such in the panel portion in Chicago.

That is upsetting. I do not know the next time I will get down that way for a clinic. And it would be nice to see all the guys I remember from my 4 years in SCCUA.

I have never had my room paid for.

Is that because of the clinic you choose to attend or that your conference(s) simply don't pay room expense at any of the clinics?
