The next MLB hire could very well be Adam Hamari.  I'm starting this thread to link to his plate performances throughout the season starting with tonight which is almost 100%!  If you want to emulate an umpire...this guy would be a great place to start.  I've got an #umpcrush !

Didn't he miss one or two like the rest of us?

At that level if you only miss one or two that's like working a perfect game. At the big league level if you miss 8-10 pitches that is considered "meets expectations".

that was sarcasm Zach! :)

Adam's a super cool guy as well!  He joined James Hoye at the Southeast Michigan Umpire Camp (SEMUC) this past February as an additional 'guest' instructor.  VERY cool to have 2 pros keeping an eye on your drills, etc, then pulling you aside and giving you tips!

I havent missed a pitch in 6 years!

I haven't either!  I've seen every pitch thrown when I was behind the plate!!

Always liked him. Read somewhere that he was the breed of umpire geek that I am. He's still fairly young too so getting a permanent spot would be neat and also well deserved. (Also I have no idea if he's the one that was behind the @NotAdamHamari twitter but that was amusing while it lasted.)

I can see a pitch f/x or similar evaluation coming to umpire clinics soon.  How much would you pay for an evaluation?

Tuesday Aug 11th Zone.  Another solid performance!  Struggled on a couple of pitches with the lefty in the box, but his low zone is spot on...those are the toughest ones and the ones that they argue the most.

Sidebar: Does dominent eye affect how we call righties and lefties?

Yes, I make much better calls on hitters working either side when it is open.

The typical LHB's called zone is wider on the outside than the actual strike zone, and wider than called on either side of the plate for the RHB. And, the typical LHB's called zone on the inside is right on the actual zone. Hamari seems to work consistently within those typical called zones.

Now, this is a comment about the typical zone, not Hamari's: Some are saying it a dominant eye thing. And, it might be. But I have a different hypothesis about why the typical LHB's zone is different than the typical RHB's zone. I think it could be because all F2's are right handed. So, pitches just outside to LHBs are received (framed if you wish) like strikes by F2's --- they don't have to extend their arm across their body. Furthermore, pitches just off the inside to LHB's can't be framed as well, and the PU is right on top of those --- they are easy to call balls.

What about RHB's? Pitches just off the inside to RHBs are framed well --- thus the RHB zone is extended in a bit. What about pitches just off the outside to RHBs? Well, I don't have a great understanding of that, given F2's being right-handed, but that might just be our normal propensity to have the zone extend outside a bit.
