Replay Review: runner never got to 1st. Safe or out?

This really happened about 2 weeks back: runners on 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs. Starlin Castro hits a long fly ball down LF line thinking it's in the stands. He watches the ball from the box land right by the line. Both runners touch home. Ump immediately calls foul ball. Madden (manager) comes out to appeal the foul/fair ball call since it was so close to call. Result was it was ruled foul. My question is what would have happened if it was ruled fair? Since Castro dogged it and never made it to first, would they have given him first and allow the 2 runs or would he have been out? Or, possibly, would they have given him a ground rule double since the ball was never played by a fielder? It was never addressed on the broadcast, so please clear my mind for me

Umpires get to place the runners. Cannot assume outs.

A fair ball that leaves live-ball territory in flight over fair is a home run. The BR and any runners would then need to complete their awards (run the bases legally).

Let me clarify. This was not a home run ball. It landed down the left field line and Castro never ran to first. If the call got overturned and ruled a fair ball, what would the result be?

If it bounced into the stands then later ruled fair it would be a double, runners advance 2 bases. If the ruling was changed to fair and the ball did not go into the stands (Just bounced off the OF wall or something), the umpires would place the runners. Only thing that's certain is they will not call the BR out, or any baserunner.

the way I see it, he started down the line, then reacts to the foul call and stops.  Where to place him is a great question. I would think 1st, because if called fair, the fielder was in position to get the ball in to second and prevent Castro from getting to 2nd.

If it had indeed been reversed to fair, I believe the crew may use the NY command center video to place the runners.

Same as in NCAA -- place the runners, using a "conservative" approach (I think that's the word in the book).  So, if it's a certain double, give him second; if it's not, keep him at first.
