So while this ultimately gets handled properly, what could you do better, if anything, on a play like this in 2-man mechanics?

Communication is always going to be our friend out there.  Make eye contact, and tap your chest if you have a better angle than the umpire who is responsible for making the call but is not making it.  Wait for his confirmation that you can take it and then make the appropriate call.

The best way to get this right in 2-man is for PU to not make the call since it's not in his area.

(And, wasn't this already on here?  Maybe I saw it elsewhere)

I see the need to do two things to make this work well.

1.  Get the proper angle so you can see the tag/no tag.

2.  Know the rules.  Too many coaches and umps think BR would be out for avoiding the tag, out of the baseline, whatever.  This is one of those plays that looks funny, but is legal.

Oh, and why the pitcher gave up is beyond me.  Shame on him.

Wow.  That defensive player had to have known that he didn't tag the runner.  Very smart for the BR to keep running th 1B.

That's quite a mess.  Communication, communication, communication.

With runners on 1st and 2nd, in 2-man, the BU is going to be in C and should have the correct angle on this play.

Do we have anything on the BR running outside the 3 foot line on his way "back" to 1st after the "tag"? Wouldn't that satisfy out of the baseline?

No!! There was not a play being made on him at that point. He is free to choose his own path to the bag. And that would also pertain to the RL. No play was made so there is no RLI.

Nope!  FED 8-4-2a:

Any runner is out when he runs more than three feet away from a direct line between bases to avoid being tagged...

Such was not the case in this play.

Yeah when I posted this I didn't realize it was under the college section.

As for what we do, as the PU if I see something weird about to go down then I try to angle myself in such a way that I am not having to say "Sorry, didn't see it" all the time.

No.  He was backing up and not side to side.  Plus, what ElkOil said.
