#8, the correct answer is D.  They reference 5-5 a,c,e,g as explanation but I don't really see that explained in those rules.  What am I missing?

You don't need to put someone into the order yet because they're not due to bat yet.

If you don't announce it it's an unannounced sub and that doesn't take effect until the sub batter enters the box.

Bottom line - until the slot is due up there's no need.

When the DH is ejected, the P becomes a P/DH -- so a "new" DH does not need to be announced yet.  Note that if a new DH comes up later, the P cannot appear offensively in the game.

I disagree with the answer to #1.  I think it should be "immediate dead ball", not "award R1 third."

I agree that R1 should not be awarded 3rd base.

Although the balk itself doesn't kill the ball, the ball entering DBT does.  Because all runners (R1 in this case) AND the batter haven't advanced at least one base, the balk is not nullified and should be enforced.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't seen the answers to this quiz, but I would go with A.  Award R1 second base because the balk was called.

Why do you want to punish the offense for the defense's mistake? Also, did you forget that If a balk is immediately followed by a wild throw by the pitcher to a base that permits a runner or runners to advance, then you just protect those runners to the base they would have been awarded by the balk.

I think we all(?) know the rule -- in fact question #2 deals with just that.

But, Q1 says "balks, THEN (my emphasis) steps off.  AFTER (ditto)... throws"  Makes it seem like two or three separate moves, and the ball should've been dead before the stepoff / throw.

So am I understanding this correctly?  The proper interp is: a "live ball" after a balk (in OBR/NCAA) is only enforced if a pitch directly follows the balk?   ie...If F1 does anything other than pitch after a balk, kill it immediately?

I would not say that.  If the pitcher "knee pops" or something like that on his attempt to pick off at first and throws it away, keep it live.

Pitch or THROW.  F1 could not step toward first but throw there.  Balk, but keep it live.  If F3 catches / gloves the ball, kill it; if not keep it live and R1 gets all he can get (and if he's out after second, the out stands).

Is this the one where Paronto said that the key was wrong?

No.  The "wrong answer key" is in quiz 3.

So if F1 starts/stops.  Then, in a completely separate motion, steps off and throws it away, we're supposed to let that play?
