First game with snow

Last week was beautiful here in upstate NY.  This week is miserable.  Got rained out Mon, Tues & Wed.  On Thursday, we're getting snow flurries, sometimes rather heavy, but nothing stuck to the ground.  The game went on.  It was clear for the most part, but very cold.  And every once in a while, the flurries would visit us during the game.  I hope that's the last time....

I had snow yesterday too!!! It snowed hard for a while, and even started to stick a little just before the game ended via mercy rule in the 6th. My partner and I froze!

It won't be the last time. Typically it's either early April or during fall ball but in my 8 years I've done probably a dozen with flurries or some that the snow actually stuck.

In another life I would go south to work early ball and, occasionally some southerners would come north, although I don't exactly know why.  Anyway, I find myself working with a dude from Florida who wanted to open a D3 league DH we were scheduled to do.  The teams want to get these games in.  The only problem I have is that it was colder than my dog's frozen fudge-sickles.  He was on the road and, I guess, needed the money.

 

The wind was blowing straight out.  It snowed on and off.  The home crew had had the infield tarped so its surface was warmer than the outfield; it's OK, but the outfield was turning white.  As each snow shower comes through, everybody except those at the plate with the wind at their back was lowering the bill of their cap to see.  I kept giving my partner the "I'm-having-trouble-seeing-and-remembering-why-we're-doing-this-crap" sign, and he kept giving me back a thumbs-up sign.

 

Late in the one-sided game, a "snowball" went shooting over 2B on the ground into CF.  I was in C, so I stepped up, turned with the sound and saw the trail left by the ball, but not the ball.  I insisted my Floridian partner shut it down after that. 

 

F-F-F-F-F-F-Fun times.

Worked a game in the cold Monday... the hail Tuesday... the snow Wednesday... the BITTER cold Thursday... I took the 50-degree game today with gratitude!!

Last night's game was very cold.  It's funny how there's only one thing that expands in the cold.  Strangely enough, that same thing seems to expand when it's very hot out as well.....

Snow in the early season in Maine seems to be the norm, especially in the college season. Many of the umpires keep layers of clothes in the car, gloves, hoods, insulated jackets. The worst is the wind - need to have some sort of wind protection here. The weather can cost a lot of money for the umpires, just in clothing - as the temperature can change 70 degrees during the season here. 20's & 30's to 80's & 90's back to 30's & 40's in the fall.

Bottom line for spring baseball in Maine - warm clothes and lots of baseballs (as it warms up, it gets muddy).

A few years back, I had to stop a varsity HS game on opening day, because snow made it impossible to see the ball coming off of the bat. In central Alabama. SMH...
