Runners on second and third, one out. Line drive to the shortstop, he makes the catch for 2 out. The runner on second does not tag up and gets caught in a rundown (a mistake by the defence). The runner on third tags up and runs home while the rundown is on. The rundown ends when the defensive team realizes the situation and steps on second (the runner has not yet returned). Three out! But does the run count??

If I remember correctly, this is a time play and if the run scores before the fielders step on 2nd, plate the run.

It is NOT a force play.

This question seems to get asked at least once a day.  We should make new posters read it before they are allowed to post. :)

 

Hopefully more umpires are getting it right on their fields.  It makes it easier for all of us.
