A coach is allowed three free trips to the mound in a game, plus one extra free trip in the event of an extra-inning game (with the exception of 9-4-b provisions).

I interpret this to mean only one extra trip, no matter if you play 1 extra inning or 5?  Not 1 per inning like FED?  Correct?

A.R. 1 - If, after one trip to the same pitcher in the same inning, or three free trips in a game, the coach goes to the plate umpire to announce a pitching change (does not go to the mound), a second trip shall be charged (when the change is recorded on the official lineup card). If moved to a defensive position, the pitcher shall not return to pitch.

I'm a little confused by this one?

I think I've heard that the coach needs to inform the umpire of a pitching change prior to crossing the line on his way out to the mound and that he needs to leave the mound immediately once the reliever is brought in or a trip will be charged.  Can't find it in the rule book though.

Kinda new to the NCAA game, thanks for any help.

Regarding what you heard, ask the guys where they read that. Regarding a trip, the rule requires leaving once the warmup occurs. I don't know how strictly this is applied in your area:

d The trip to the mound (which may include a conference with the infielders) begins when the coach crosses the foul line, and shall be concluded when the coach leaves the dirt circle or the pitcher begins his eight warm-up pitches; and

I'm not sure what exactly you're confused about.

The A.R. pertains to a coach trying to circumvent a rule. If a coach moves a pitcher to a defensive position on the FIRST trip, he can bring that pitcher back into pitch later in the game. If a coach makes a SECOND trip in the same inning or he's used all of his trips in the game, the pitcher cannot return to the mound.

So coaches were going to the plate umpire to notify them of a pitching change so they weren't charged with a 2nd trip and the pitcher could return to the mound later in the game. This A.R. prevents that from happening. Go ahead and make the change, charge him with a trip and let him know that pitcher cannot return to the mound later in the game.

As far as trips in extra innings, yes, they get 1 trip period.

In NCAA, do unused trips from the first nine innings carry over? i.e If the team uses 2 conferences i 9 innings do they have 2 for the rest of the game, or is it like FED where the 1st 3 conferences do not carry over into the extra innings?

Yes Rich the trips carry over.. so say team "A" has used 1 trip in 9 innings, then in the extra the will get 3...

Thanks. I don't do college. However, if I ever do, I'd like to have a good idea of the rules differences. Always learning.

That makes sense.  Thanks
