@ Jocko

I swear you sent this guy to work with me a few weeks back.

"Partner" (an experienced slo-pitch umpire?) shows up 45 minutes before the game.  He's already dressed and I see him from the parking lot on the field talking with everyone.   I think WTF.

Go down and introduce myself and notice he's got all his plate gear on - I'm still in street clothes.   (I had been assigned the dish on GM1 - already gotten my gear out and cleaned it, etc.  You bet I want that early plate while its cool :) )  He tells me he only lives a few blocks away and figured he'd just walk over dressed.  I offered to let him store his gear and such in my car, but he said no I'll just keep everything by the fence.   He looks at his phone and realizes I have the plate because he looked at the schedule wrong.  OK.  We have a pregame where he insists PU has ALL tag ups, catches, fair/foul.  :shakehead:  Begin crash course in proper two man mechanics - to which he responded "This is too hard, this why I don't go to clinics or do what the book says.  My way is easier."  Gimme your game fee if thats what you insist.

During the game he would routinely be out of position, and refuse to move back to A when he should.  I think he called at a steal at 3B from A or B once (Small diamond) forgetting about R3.  "Go on, I got it from here".  I even brushed the plate a few times thinking he'd get where he was supposed to and motioned to him.  When he was on the plate, he wore a mask that has no bottom pad or throat protection.  WTFF :wow:   Just a metal frame with a top pad.

Last game we were on a different field.  He as the BU jumped the plate meeting and began making up weird ground rules and referring to lodged balls as "blocked balls", insisting thats always the way we've played it at this field.  :question1:   After the conference was over, he asked me how many years I've been doing these tournaments, as I don't know what I'm talking about.   I finally told him to get his @ss out to RF and do not talk to me.  "Young man, you do not talk to me like that - you're going to be in trouble when I call the UIC!!"  One of the coaches heard him say it, and said "now the umpires are fighting."   I talked with the UIC later about this and learned this guy was probably going to end up quitting, as he was mad at all of the assignors over lack of game assignments.

It was either that guy, or one I worked with naybe 6-7 years ago - that insisted he didn't call a catch when he said out and signaled so.   The ensuing cluster f~ was a negated triple play and him screaming at me I need to pay attention.   That story for some other time tho! :stir

Wow, guys I'm sorry you've had such bad experiences with some of your partners. I've worked with 60+ different umpires since I've been back working games. I haven't had any trouble like you guys describe. Most have been great to work with.

Man, I love all but 1 guy I have worked with, how they feel about a greeny like me IDK but I know i NEVER try to f-up the way some of the partners you guys work with do, i bust my @$$ to get in position every play and I listen to my senior partners Im not a great umpire but I give it my best every time, including one game I ran to the woods to vomit between innings, I know partners don't mind me because they know I try, and learn from mistakes and I dont sabatoge my partners like some of your horror story partners do, I know I'm not a great umpire but I take pride in trying my best, and I can't stand these partners who intentonally sabatoge you guys, it makes young umpires look bad as a whole and upsets me

As to a game with a time limit and urging teams to hustle and get a move on.  I'm probably in the (extreme) minority here but what's the point?  I'm all for showing some hustle and enthusiasm but the games going to only last so long and if they want to waste THEIR game playing time so be it.  I have found that trying to get them to move it along is like trying to herd cats.  It just doesn't seem to work.  Just my .01

Now if there's no clock then that's an entirely different story.

when you allow the home team to lollygag, you're giving an unfair advantage to them.

Sooooo.... what did you say?Does it matter?I'd say so people blow a gasket in different ways some people some give advice and criticism strernly some(myself included) will go nuts example "WHAT THE F--- ARE YOU DOING OUT THERE ARE YOU STUPID OR INSANE ACTING LIKE A F- ing ROOKIE OUT THERE YOU DUMB S__ HEAD MF'er!"(Thats a quote from a one leagues beginners powerpoint about what some senior umps will say to incompetent umpires it encourages some guys to work harder to avoid that "conversation")Which was your style

In the interest of fairness, he DID come to you and apologize for one remark he made. Small victory, I guess...

I had a partner like that last week, except it was a HSM and he stuck his neck out when getting set. Granted, he was a second-year umpire, but he should have been doing much lower levels of ball.

Every half inning I was going over to tell him something else. I could see his neck between his mask and CP from in the field. Man, if I can see it from way the hell out there, the ball can find its way there.

He also escalated an argument with a coach for no apparent reason. Coach wasn't happy with the strike zone (fair enough, it was a bit tight), and was chirping the whole game. Eventually, partner called time, walked over towards the dugout and started yelling, "What was that?! What'd you say?!" (Me: :wow:) And stood there waiting for the coach to apologize.

Like... damn, man. If you're gonna dump the guy, dump him. But there's never a good enough reason to escalate an argument like that.

Eff that. I'm not their mommy.  They want to waste their time, let them.   Most of the time when a partner starts to shoo in and out, it leads to unpleasantness.  Our job is tough enough when we DON'T go out of way to piss people off.

Having said that, I HAVE told a couple teams to pick it up this year, but absent absolute indifference by players AND coaches, I let them do what they do.

Of course I'm not doing 16 games on a weekend......
