We had a runner attempting to score at home today. The throw from near third base went to the catcher who caught the throw in plenty of time. I thought he was going to get in a run-down but instead the catcher charged at him, tagged him and then shoved him. We both (my partner and I) signalled that the catcher was ejected for malicious contact but we let the out stand.

Is that the proper call? Or should the malicious contact have resulted in the runner scoring?

NFHS 3-3-1-n Penalty"If the defense commits the malicious contact, the player is ejected; the umpire shall rule either safe or out on the play and award the runner (s) the appropriate base (s) he felt they would have obtained had the malicious contact not occurred. "

Your sequence of events. ...tag (out) then MC. The out stands and F2 is ejected.

I agree with Jocko. From what it sounds like, the catcher made the tag legally and then decided to shove the runner. I would have the out stand but the catcher will be given the hook.

The description doesn't sound like MC to me, maybe unsportsmanlike conduct, but doesn't sound malicious.

That's nothing in baseball, and 15 yards in football.

I'm fine with MC if that's what you ruled, @nicshow. As @Jocko points out, you handled it correctly.

OBR has no MC provisions, but many amateur leagues adopt the FED MC provisions, so they would apply to those leagues as well.

My only question concerns the first sentence: "We had a runner attempting to score at home today." Where else would he be attempting to score? :P

I think it's something in HS baseball. Sportsmanship is one of the required "mentions" in plate meetings.

ART. 6 . . . No umpire may be replaced during a game unless he becomes ill or is injured. His right to disqualify

players or to remove nonplayers for objecting to decisions or for unsportsmanlike conduct is absolute. Ejections will

be made at the end of playing action.

MC is like pornography, I can't define it, but I know it when I see it!

Couple years ago at a night game we had a kid trying to score in the left field parking lot (true story!)...
