Great to relive that moment.

I was jumping up and down at home shouting" Obstruction" so loud the dogs ran down to the tack room.

My sweet wife was just laughing and watching me.

Great night for an umpire AND St. Louis fan like me!

I remember my mom calling me into the room to watch and me screaming "THAT'S OBSTRUCTION!!" on the first replay I saw.

I love your mom!

Most Moms and wifes don't have a clue about baseball and umpiring. Great to have someone that does.

It lives on not just because the winning run -- the run that caused the scoreboard to read: "Cardinals 5, Red Sox 4" -- was scored by a man (Craig) who never touched home plate.

Can you imagine if one of the Red Sox would have had the wherewithal to actually appeal this...

Great article.

Great article!

It captures all the subtleties and reactions.

I hadn't appreciated the Buckner-esque connection.

@mjr_2013 another mom story!  Hahaha.  She is the unofficial "Mom of UE" in my book.  (There is a history there, see his other posts involving his mom.)

We had that discussion at the time. No real consensus was reached but one train of thought was that as the rule reads:

" . . impose such penalties, if any, as in his judgment will nullify the act of obstruction."

that it includes the ability to award the touch.

It's ESPN..They know as much about umpiring as Tim He-who-shall-not-be-named.

The crew got it right, but I thought their mechanics could have been better.
