Not sure where to post this query, but here goes: anyone have achilles tendon problems? Do mid-cut shoes cause discomfort by rubbing against your heel? I'm thinking about low-cut shoes. Any ideas or suggestions?

 

Disclosure: I've also asked this question on another forum. The more advice I can get, the better I'll be able to make an intelligent decision.

I don't have any health issues but the Reebok Zigs plate shoes in low cut black or black/white are amazing. They are the lightest plate shoe on the market and are remarkably comfortable, hence why I purchased 3 pairs of them when I got a good deal on them from baseballsavings.com.

I have achilles soreness, but my shoes don't have an effect on it.  I have both low and mid Reebok magistrates (not the zigs) and prefer the lows because the mids rub on my ankle too much.

I have the scar from AT repair of about 15 years ago.  The scar is sensitive to touch, but no shoe/sock combination bothers me.  I prefer hi tops myself, to help prevent ankle roll on lousy fields.  Reduce the problem by making sure to go to PT/OT and do what they say.  You do not want to have to deal with a rupture.  For normal folks, it takes a couple of years to feel comfortable on the field again, trusting it will not rupture again.

That's exactly my problem--the spot where my shoes rub is where I have some tenderness from my Achilles problem--and why I'm contemplating lows.

Hie thee to a podiatrist.  You don't want to take medical advice from a bunch of internet wannabees, and you don't want to risk further injury from the rubbing.  But if it isn't going to cause further problems and you can stand the pain, so be it -- or maybe there's some sort of splint or padding that can be temporarily used between the shoe and the calf.

Not quite the same.  My mids rub my ankle, not my achilles.  Different problem.

I have Achilles tendonitis in my right leg and have issues with mid's as well. I cannot wear NB plate shoes as I can't walk after the game. I have no problems with my old Spot Bilt's, however. I am waiting for another game check or two and Reebok Zigs here I come!

I have had Achilles issues for a while. After about a year of pain and hobbling, I went to a podiatrist. His prescription was lots of pre and post stretching, ice, and ankle support with tape and/or sleeves.

 

Particular shoes don't seem to make it better or worse. The streching has definitely made a huge difference for baseball and when I run.

 

Go see someone who kows the anatomy of your ankles.

 I went to a sports doc a few years ago, who sent me to a physical therapist.  Go get real advice.  But my experience is that the best friends for an achilies issues are (1) rest, (2) ice, and (3) proper strecthing (which a PT can teach).  I occaisonally get flare ups (in one now), and they really don't go away without resting from the things that irritate the achielies.  (BTW, it is also my understanding that ibuprofin, etc., won't really help -- it can dull the pain, but because the tendon issue is not a swelling issue, it really doesn't help with the core problem.
