I'm watching the Brewers/Cubs spring training game. The home plate umpire doesn't have a throat guard on. How recommended is it to have one, and wouldn't it be recommended in the Majors considering the speeds and movement of the pitches?

I wouldn't get behind the plate without one!

they are adults and can assume the risks.

Personally I wear one -- they aren't even noticeable so theres no "cost" to wearing one and you do get some benefit.

But, I don't care if you don't wear one.

Ever. Not worth the risk.

If you do not want to go to the ER (if you survive) then you better wear one.

Take it from experience wear one!!!!!!

As been said, the Ear, Nose Throat Doctor will scare the Hell out of you should you ever get a Fracture Lyrnx and survive to even make it to ER or Urgent Care.

Been There, Done That!!!!!

Also remember, in MLB you have much better catchers than any where else.

Professional Catcher = Professional Protection.

The life you gamble with may be your own.

I believe he means the ball came up under his mask and a protector would have prevented that. I bought one for both my masks. I just thought it was odd and unsafe at that level.

Well, you also could look at a lot of those umpires and you would notice that their stances leave them quite unprotected.  Again, and to Semper's point, having a truly professional catcher in front of you provides a layer of security that guys like us will never see.  I cringe every time I see an MLB umpire get in his stance with his hands unprotected and his fingers on top of his shin guard tops, but how many of those guys get hit in the hands/arms (not many)?  The hits we see are normally to the head where the catcher gets crossed up.

Had a ball lodge in my mask at HS Varsity. Immediately bought a dangler.

I don't see the connection.

Where it lodged, with a dangler it would of never got there
