Situation: no outs, R2.

The batter hits a grounder to the shortstop. As the ball rolls, R2 starts for third base. Realizing that he may be tagged out at 3rd, he decides suddenly to go back to 2nd base. At the same time, F6 picks up the ball and decides to play to 1b to retire BR. As R2 returns, he runs into F6 who is about to throw the ball. The umpire judged a defensive obstruction. 
I would have judged an offensive interfence. What about you guys ?

I'd guess his thinking was that he was done fielding the ball.

He was wrong: he has the right of way until he throws it or makes a play.

more succinctly, if R2 did the same thing in his original advance to third base would you have called interference?exact same rules applyand the same criteria is what we look for regardless of which direction the runner is moving

Grozzly:  We are all assuming that he "picked up the ball" cleanly and didn't let it bounce away and then try to pick it up a second time, correct?

How can F6 obstruct the runner when F6 is in possession of the ball?

that's what the (future ejected) defensive team coach tried to understand barking on the umpire.....
