Ralph Kiner died today at the age of 91. 

 

He had a .279 career BA.

369 HR's

1,105 RBI's

6 time All Star.

 

RIP Good Sir.

I grew up watching the Mets and Yankees on local TV and listening on the radio. Kiner (and all the others) were great to listen to. Kiner's Korner was a must watch after the game, as he would have the stars of the visiting teams come in for post game interviews in an era where seeing and hearing  players from other cities just never happened.

 

He came out with some memorable lines, like the time he was broadcasting on Father's Day and said," To all you Fathers out there, happy birthday." When I was a kid, I had no idea that he was a prolific HR hitter, and as mentioned above Kiner hit 369. Perhaps most amazing is that he did that in only 10 seasons of 154 games.

 

I know many here (including me) complain about the commentators not knowing rules and they root for their home teams, but maybe it would be better for the game if some of the characters like Kiner were behind the mike on nationally broadcast games. The cookie cutter lifeless announcers like Joe Buck or Bob Costas wouldn't know how to react to the antics of guys like Lou Pinella or Jack Morris or some of the other all time greats that every kid who plays ball should know.

 

I think I may have officially crossed over the line to curmudgeon.

I lived 90 miles from Philly *and* New York. I got WWOR, WPIX, *and* the Philly stations. Add to the above Richie Ashburn and Harry Kalas. Memories.
