New MLB Hires

I looked and didn't see any post about this. But MLB hired 7 new umpires.

 

Barrett, Baker, Reyburn, Rackley, Muchlinski, Blaser, and Estabrook.

Agreed. So we should not balk him. He will being doing enough of that in the coming months. Hopefully all his balks are no brainers (dropped ball on mound) in the 9th inning to keep game from going extra innings.

 

Nice to see Mr. Barrett make the major leagues in the time it takes one to complete their residency for another highly respected profession. With 212 games under his belt, he should have a clean slate with no debts to pay off if he has used the money from those 212 games wisely.

each AAA guy seen 25-30 times by 4 supervisors who just watch AAA all year.

 

Do not think AA and below are seen that often in a season.

And for those interested in the height issue contemplating going to one of the umpire schools. DJ Reyburn is listed at 5'8"

 

So, are the other 2 spots going to be like a DL situation where they will be on a crew but not technically full time MLBU.

 

So, that would mean 9 spots for new "call up" umpires with absolutely no experience in MLB yet. There were 12 umpires in the AFL this winter and since Gibson is already a "call up" 9 of the 11 should move up to call up status at some point in the coming year if not all 11. They used 16 "call ups" last year and there were fewer games than previous years when they used 19/20 call ups. Could be that all the AFL umpires will see action this year. Since 3 of the AFL umpires started 2013 in AA before moving the AAA, there is a very good possibility that there could be call ups this year who started in AA the year before or are seeing call up status in their first "full year" of AAA status. Tumpane with 164 games and Fagan with 91 would be the 2 permanent call ups if they go by number of games previously worked. Then you have Ripperger(69), Wolcott(60), Little(56), Hamari(48), Basner(36), and Gibson(24) in games worked. Looks like some major amount of games to be worked this year for many of those on call up status. 1049 call up games were worked last year but that was 340 less than 2012 and 240 less than 2011.

 

Sean Barber, Jeff Gosney, Jon Byrne, Seth Buckminster, Marcus Patillo, Stu Shuerwater, Anthony Johnson and Tom Woodring are the AAA veterans who should move up that worked the AFL this winter.

Pat Hoberg(AAA-6/27), Gabe Morales(AAA-6/24), Jeff Morrow(AAA-7/22) are the AA/AAA from last year and at least 2 should see action if not all 3 during the year from the AFL.

 

If MLB has to go deeper, then it would probably be ones who worked AFL in 2012 (ie. Chad Whitson, Travis Carlson, Ben May, Andy Duodones, Chris Segal, Joel Hospodka, Allen "Nick" Bailey ) that are still in AAA and not released, or maybe the first time ever or first time in a while that an umpire without AFL experience will work as a "call up." They should stay ahead of the game by giving the expected call ups a full Spring Training schedule as well as the next group on their list, and maybe some with no AFL yet so they can be seen in case they need to be used.

Well, apparently 10 of the 11 out of 12 of the AFL 2014 received numbers (remember Gibson already had a number), and were given a MLB Spring Training assignment. Jeff Morrow was given a Spring Training assignment but not a number. He had only worked 38 AAA games last year as he was not called up till 7/22. Morales, and Hoberg came up in June and worked about 65 games but did not get a true 1/2 year or 70 games either, but they did get numbers. 2012 AFL given Spring Training assignments were Allen Bailey, Ben May, Chris Segal, and Chad Whitson, with May, Segal and Whitson also receiving numbers, but not Bailey, while Travis Carlson, Andy Duodones and Joel Hospodka, were not chosen for ST off the 2012 list. There were 4 umpires given a Spring Training assignment with no AFL experience--David Soucy, Brad Myers, Alex Ortiz and Shaun Lampe. **Shaun Lampe is first umpire that started in CPL to received a full Spring Training assignment.

 

And apparently, Angel Campos is still on the "call up" list and Spring Training list and is the most senior "call up" with total games worked after not working as a call up at all in 2013, and will be part of the IL this year.
