2014 Camps

I'm a guy who'll be calling my first season of Division I baseball this year after graduating from The Umpire School this year. I'm looking forward to moving up in the college ranks and am trying to make a list of college camps to possibly attend next year. I know there are a lot of well-respected college umpires here. What camps do you guys recommend attending in 2014?

The one on here would most likely the the Mid American Umpire Clinic (talk to @MidAmUmp). Also a good one is the Black and Blue Umpire Camp run in Sacramento in November.

I don't think our Advanced Clinic dates have been set in stone yet (should be Sept. 11-14).  We should have our websites up to date by early January with hopefully a couple announcements.........

Awesome. I'll check into that one. Being I'm in the south, I've considered International and Southern.

1st off you need to look at what will help you in your area?... will going to Missouri help?... possibly cause Rich Fetchiet  â€‹assigns to the CUSA. And i have been to the Mid Am Clinic is is great. But you really should focus on clinics were Tony Thompson are at . Just My opinion. The Black and blue is nice, but is going to Cali going to help you in your area?

Good call Haid. BBUC would be great for us on the Left Coast. Not much good for someone that lives east of the Mississippi.

My thoughts exactly, Mike. I'm really shopping the southern states and trying to be seen by Tony Thompson. I missed the opportunity to go to Pensacola this year but next year, I'm going to work hard to get seen.

There have been so many conference realignments going on, assigners are moving into different areas.  Do some research and figure out who you really need to be seen by.  But here's something else to consider...An assigner can only be in one place at one time.  So even if you go to a clinic where the assigner will be, you may not be seen by him (very much or at all).  Most assigners rely a great deal on feedback from their upper-echelon guys to let them know who's out there they need to be using.  Sometimes this is a better thing.  Having 2-3 guys telling an assigner that you need to be working is HUGE.  Having said that you also need to do some additional research to find out what camps those guys will be at.

Great bit of advice. You're totally correct about only being able to be one place at a time. I'll be doing my research to learn who the upper echelon consists of throughout the season as I meet more guys in different conferences.

@JDavis225... What conferences are you looking to eventually be considered for? This will help determine what camps or clinics you should attent to get seen. For example, if you are looking to get into say the ACC, SEC, SunBelt, SoCon, A-Sun, Big South, or OVC, planning to attend one of Tompson's clinics would be beneficial. These clinics are heled in the fall and are held in various locations from Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, and sometimes Texas.

Like Haid and MidAm have said, get to know the conference guys in your non-conference group. I'm willing to bet some of these guys work for the assigners that you need to be seen by. Get to know them.... Have them give you their honest evaluation of you work and ask can they put in a word for you. Hopefully you can get an invite to a clinic where you can get seen by that assigner.

SEC, ACC and/or the Big XII are the ultimate goals. Living in Louisiana and not planning on relocating any further than TX, I think those conferences are possible. Thanks for the advice. I'll be looking to get in front of T. Thompson next fall. @Fittske24
