Amazing article. Jim Joyce has always been one of my favorite umpires ever, and might just be at the top.

Yes, the blown call on the perfect game was a bad miss but it was one play in a career  of great calls. What is never mentioned is shortly after that play Joyce was voted the best umpire in the league by the players. What drives me crazy is every article about him has to include his miss in the perfect game.

The blown call in the gallaraga game cemented my opinion of Jim Joyce.....

 

Everyone in the park knew the situation, Jim called the runner safe because he really believed he was safe......he was wrong........, but he had the strength and courage to make what he felt was the right call in the toughest of situations..... 

 

I cant tell you how many umpires I knew said they would never call that guy safe in a perfect game...whether he was safe or not.....they would have called him out...........

 

I want the kind of partner who makes the call he believes is right in the tough situations............not the call he thinks will cause him the least grief.....

Got to meet and listen to Jim talk at one of the umpire meetings here in Portland last year (he is from Beaverton, OR) and was incredible.

He even let us ask about that game in Detroit. Said it still tares him up inside that he missed the call and when Galaraga came to the plate for the lineup exchange, he had no clue he was there until he turned around and saw him standing next to him at the plate.

Another thing that never gets mention is that Jim saved a woman's life a couple years before. An Arizona Diamondback's employee collaped as they were walking from the clubhouse to the field on day. He performed "hands only" CPR and delayed the start of the gameto stay with her until the pparamedics arrived.

Ok, then what do you think of the final out in Phillip Humbers perfect game a couple years ago??  Do you really think the batter went, or was that the "Expected" call??

at the very least it had to be last year since Jim appeared at our meeting in early February before the start of spring training.

August 22, 2012 was when he saved the woman. June 2010 was the perfect game controversy.
