One of the greatest compliments I ever got came from an Ex Phillie who was at a LL game I was working. His grandson was playing. After the game, I was leaving out the winning teams gate and he said, "You called a nice game, Blue." I said, "Thanks, Johnny C."    Johnny Callson was my hero of my youth. I had chills. 

 

But as others have mentioned, the more they say they know, the less they actually know.

I had a similar situation. After calling a PONY game in Denison, TX, a man approached us and said, "y'all called a good game."

My response, "Thank you, Mr. Davis." (Ray Davis - Texas Rangers)

I coached and umpired for several years while my son was in the LL Senior and Big League programs, and when I was coaching nobody knew I was an umpire unless the umpires recognized me. I stayed very low key and mostly on the bench. I very rarely approached the umpires, and when I did I it was very low key. I found that it was a very awkward situation and I eventually gave up coaching.

 

I also have umpired for ex major league players, and all but one were respectful and great role models for their players. The one I had issues with thought reminding me that he was an ex major league player would reverse his ejection...no way!

Me too. I've found that adding a couple of large blinks while doing it speeds the process.

I hate it when a coach says anything about their past experience.  It means nothing to the here and now, so it will not enhance your argument/point.

Umpire buddy told me the story about the time he was on a business trip, killing time in some bar. Dick Butkis comes in. My umpire buddy watches lots of people making a big fuss over the celeb, but he keeps to himself/minding his own drink. Butkis comes up to this guy and strikes up a conversation only because he didn't act like Butkis was some god.   

 

Lots of sport jock-sniffers out there. Celebs get used to the god-like worship that many endulge them with. Sometimes they have to point out that they are/used to be somebody.
