A HTBT situation but, instead of trying to have fun with him, why not explain to him why it was a Fair Ball.

1) you might have been able to educate him on the rule.

2) you may not have had to EJ him.

If your not going to EJ him for running out without Requesting and being Granted Time to discuss it and you start any discussion with him then at least make the conversation civil on your part.

Never Bait a coach or Manager for a EJ.

Easy to Ej in most cases, harder to keep them in the game by explaining the reason for the call.

So let me get this straight. The coach comes out to argue a borderline fair foul call. Something that he is allowed to do and should do. Argument is over and he is returning to his dugout exactly as you asked him to do. Yet you have to get one more word in so that you can justify ejecting the coach when he responds to your comment. Wow! :shakehead:

Perhaps he overstepped in the baiting, but I am sorry, the coach of an 18U team SHOULD know why that ball was fair.  I will explain it to a Little League Dad/Coach who may not know the rule, but at that level HE should know the game.

I would have dumped on the "that's terrible. Learn the game." as I would take that as a personal affront.

Just my two cents.

Based on the original post, it did not seem to be a borderline call.  Hit the bag, fair ball.

Would never have handled it like this in a tourney or our regular league games.

Umpire the game the same way as any game.

Handling Coaches and Managers should not change based on the type of game being played.

If you are getting paid to Umpire you may be the only PROFESSIONAL on the field.

The OP says volunteer or parent.

So maybe they don't know the rule.

As far as "Thats terrible.  Learn the game."  the Magic word "YOU" is missing.

I'm sorry, you lost me here.  What part of fair/foul is not a judgment call?

"That's terrible" - agreed - no eject.

"Learn the game" - I don't need a "YOU".  To me that is directed at me personally.

Coach runs out (uninvited, while ball is still live) and proceeds to present his two part arguement that A) the ball was foul, and b) if it was fair, i should have called "fair ball".  (at this point I know whats coming and decide to have some fun with it)

I tell him thats enough, and to return to his bucket (knowing I'm about to dump him anyways).  He starts walking back while still grumbling "thats terrible, learn the game" i could have dumped him right there but I decided to poke the bear and say "cmon coach, play nice", he turns and gives me the "you're pathetic"...ut ohh.... Crow hop, plant, snap fingers, pivot, BOOM! C-ya!  thanks for playing.

Premeditation and throwing chum in the water.

Yes, you caught a Shark but not one for the Trophy Room.

BTW, if you really want to collect Trophies for your EJs while umpiring, may I suggest a different sport to officiate.

I would rather remember the ones I kept in game.

I also do not EJ anyone.

THEY EJ THEMSELVES.

The best way that I have heard, and actually used when discussing a call (ESPECIALLY something very elementary and obvious) is something like this:

"Coach, explain to me how the ball is foul?"  LET HIM TALK and answer,...YOU ask the question ......

EJ? Nope, not for me ....

"Learn the game" would have been returned with "Yes, please do"  And I say this because even though 'you' isn't there, it's directed and involves me.  It's a negative comment and I'm not letting him get away with it.

Coach: "Learn the game"

Me: "Yes, please do sir"

18u league last night I'm working plate in 2nd game of a double header, everything is going smooth and havent had a single issue or grumble all night.

-Quick note about this league: it is somewhat of a recreational league as most of the players play in it in addtion to HS ball, as the season runs longer.  The coaches are usually just a parent or random volunteer.  The teams typically dont practice, they just show up and play a double header once a week.

Bottom of the 5th, R1 outs dont matter.  HT batter hits a rocket down the 3b line (hit so hard I barely had time to pop out to get a look) Ball hits the top of the bag then shoots out to no mans land along fence in foul territory, i signal fair then head towards third for potential play on R1VT's HC is screaming for a foul ball from 1b dugout (since his angle is so much better than mine),  the left fielder stops running as he think the ball is foul from his coach's antics.. R1 scores, batter ends up with a stand up triple.
