I know I'm probably going to catch a lot of heat for this, but has anyone had any luck blacking out the soles of the zig plate shoes? I'd like to wear them during the high school season but I don't know if I can get away with having that much white.

1) haven't you posted this before?

2) Again, why not just get the all black version and paint the stripes white?!?!?

No I haven't posted this, I even searched to see if someone else did and couldn't find anything. The reason I didn't buy the all black ones is they don't make the all black plate shoes in mids. Not picking I know, but hey.

Ok, no biggie, I could have sworn I've answered this question before, but it must have been buried in another thread regarding the Zigs.

A few things....

Do others in your HS association wear white on their shoes?  Has there been any backlash?  If not, no biggie.  Here in Michigan the uniform policy is all black shoes and trust me, VERY FEW all black shoes on fields!

You can also black out the white stripes and logos on your Zigs and keep the white soles.  We saw a AAA guy do that in Spring Training and it looked good.  Can't remember who, but you may be able to find the thread in the equipment forum?  I'll try if I have time :GL:

A lot of guys have white logos but no white soles. The base shoes I'm fine with all the white. I just think the plate shoes have too much white on them. I'll try the sharpie and polish, my only concern is will scrubbing bubbles strip it all off?

Posted

I'd think once its on there you will have a difficult time getting it all off.  Personally I wouldn't do it - how will you get the areas between the "zigs" to look good?

Well Mike, kind of why I was asking if anyone had done it, and how they did it.

I would caution trying to black out the Zig, this portion of the shoe has a lot of flex and compression.  I would imagine if you tried to paint it in any way, it would just flake off.

Seems like the answer so far is no.  All I was saying was that reversing the process is not likely to succeed.  If the ZIg white is anything like my NB with white soles, the white is fairly well sealed so that mud won't get in and stain it.  Not sure that Sharpie and liquid polish would do the trick.  I'd rather have someone tell me the shoes are too white first than ruin them trying to change how they look.

I can't work post season since I have white on my shoes?

They are made for baseball. If white is allowed just wear them.

Unless your local association has a problem with it, go for it.  They've (MSHSAA) never said anything to me about white on my shoes.

I would suggest if you dislike the white so much...buy a different shoe?

No kidding. A few years ago I had to do a state final and was told that the dress code was no white on your shoes. I darn sure wasn't going to go out and buy a new pair of shoes, so I wore my New Balance trainers. No issues. At our end of the year California Southern Section umpire meeting, the president mentioned that he had seen an umpire wearing shoes with white on them and that he thought it looked really good and that we should probably allow it. I am a fashionista.
