2 expensive protectors, should I keep both?

I've had my Riddell Power for about 5 years now and had the TW retrofit done over the off-season.  While I like what TW does, I'll admit one thing -- the protector is a bit bulkier than it was last season.  Probably because most of the original padding was shot, I'll admit.

 

Being the gear whore I am, I finally bit the bullet and ordered up an Unequal protector today.  Wearing the Power, I've grown used to "feeling" the occasional shot -- not in a way that causes permanent damage, of course, but I'll feel it when a baseball hits me.  TO ME, that's no big deal.

 

So I want to see if the UE is as form-fitting and low-profile as I think it will be.  I have no interest in covering anything below my ribcage, really, as I am one of those that believe that the CP's main job is to keep my vital organs in tact and keep me from breaking bones.  I want it to protect as well as possible while being as low profile as possible.

 

Anyhow, once I have the UE I have an interesting problem.  If I like the UE, I have a protector that could probably draw a serious amount of money on the protector market.  OTOH, I could just keep it around and use it from time to time and have it as a second/spare.  But it's a pretty valuable protector to not get used that often.

 

Then again, I may be back looking to sell the UE in a few weeks, so stay tuned.

The crux of the issue is that you will likely never get another Power. I did this same thing with my black Douglas. I regretted it and ended up finding one to replace it. Would you sell a 63 Corvette Split Window Coupe if you bought a new Toyota?

I hear you guys. I'll probably replace the harness, though, at some point. It has a Honig's harness now that I'm not thrilled with.

I sold a Power, an original Douglas, and my old +POS SUL mask several years ago for TOP dollar, and I never regretted it. Why? Because the gear I have now is far better.

 

Take the SUL for instance. At one time, like the Riddel was around three years ago, it was rare, cool, and the best thing around. Then lighter masks became available, and the price of those things dropped like a rock. Them, the +POS guy found a stash of them in his warehouse. Can't give them away, now. The same thing kinda happened with the Douglas, when they started making them again. The price dropped from around $400 to around $125.

 

Now, the Power won't ever, IMO, drop to those depths, but they don't command the nearly $500 I got for mine now. But you've invested in that Power with the upgrade, but dollar wise, didn't really increase it's value by that amount. I'd hang on to it, and put the All Star harness on it.

 

Yeah, I had '67 Shelby, and a '52 Telecaster. Sure, I wish I had them now, but things change, and circumstances aren't what the used to be (had to buy my first house). Weigh what that Riddell means to you, above and beyond just it's protection, and go forth accordingly. At some point in time, someone will invent some new umpire protection that will render everything we have in our closets obsolete. Is it the UE? I don't think so. But it'll happen someday, and that Riddell will not have the value it has today.

Is it the Honigs harness that came on the original K1 with the little plastic piece on the "waist" strap? I'd be willing to take that off your hands.
