An IFF situation...

High popup on the infield on the first base line.  Ump calls "Infield Fly if Fair"

The ball isn't touched by a player and hits the ground about four feet foul.

However, there is a lip where the grass line is and the ball kicks into fair territory.

What's the call?

FYI: This didn't happen, but on the field I called on this morning, it could have.  A popup with no one on nearly made it back into fair territory.

This is from OBR 2.00 Infield Fly:

"If a declared Infield Fly is allowed to fall untouched to the ground, and bounces foul before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball. If a declared Infield Fly falls untouched to the ground outside the baseline, and bounces fair before passing first or third base, it is an Infield Fly."

So if I read you correctly it sounds like it should be IFF batter out.

You've already reported the call: "Infield fly if fair!"

So, I'm gathering that the ball landed on foul ground between HP and 1B and then rolled fair, resulting in a fair ball. Call already made.

At lower levels you might have an inexperienced OC come out to quibble about this call. Tell them that IFF protects the offense, and then ask, "don't you prefer the one out to the cheap double play, coach?"

IFF if fair, sounds like ot could have been. So take the out if it ever happens and I would mention the poor grading to the field maintanence guy.  :question1:

This happened to me the other day in a U13 game. Bases loaded and I was PU and made the call. The third baseman came up to make the catch and overran it by a good bit in foul territory. The ball never touched him and shot straight to the right into fair territory. I reiterated that the batter was out and then runners took off. The defense just stood there for a minute as one run scored and everyone moved up a base. Of course the head coach for the defense came out and asked what I had. I told him IFF. He then said, "I thought the runners couldn't run on those." I said, "No, they can advance at their own risk." He shrugged and walked away.

Did you call it with F5 still running in?  Doesn't sound like ordinary effort to me.  Just asking - you were there and I wasn't.

Look back at the play.  F5 overran the ball. Dummy F5. Blew it on his own.

No, 3B literally trotted over. It was a little windy and I think that along with the "infield drift" caused him to miss it. It was definitely within ordinary effort.
