Missed Last Time By Call/Appeal

I'll look for video tomorrow. But Gerry Davis had his back turned to second as Jones tags second initially, but as an O's fan I will say he did not tag on his return to first. 

 

The Rays appealed to no luck.

None of the Rays' players gave any sign that they saw Jones miss 2nd base. F2 and F5, standing near their respective bases, were the only infielders whose backs weren't to Jones as he missed the base. Joe Maddon claimed the appeal came from him.

The umpire was watching the ball, but failed to glance at the runners. In his defense, it seemed clear that the relay home would come late, thus scoring the winning run.

Either way, the Rays weren't going to load the bases for Chris Davis. Or were they?.....

The play is at about 1:30. In the second view you can see nobody is watching Jones.

Wrong... Keep your chest to the ball.. Davis is watching the throw, touching of bases is not as big as a priority ....you watch the thrown ball as to see if it is thrown out of bounds... always watch the ball.. glance at the runners..

Yeah -- but he didnt seem to follow the last part of that advice.  Suppose it had been thrown out of play - he might not even know where to place the runner if he wasnt watching the runner when the ball was thrown (and I forget the exact sequence here so that might not be 1000% applicable in this play)
