As far as your mentee's go, it is always a good idea to receive the most information possible, this is especially true for this profession, it would be a shame to deprive them of all the ideas, theories, and knowledge that is shared around this forum. 

 

Especially if you are teaching them to wipe the bases between innings! (indicator hanging on by magic! or is that an invisible lanyard?!!?)

Frankly, I don't like your idea but I like your innovative mind. Please do not be discouraged by the responses you received here, in my humble opinion, you simply baited yourself into most of the participants here not giving your idea merit due to the SB references.

 

I personally would like to see more innovative protective products for us umpires and I certainly think you are up to the challenge.

Just an observation or 2 -

How will the clips be attached to the bag? Need something rigid to attach to so they won't pull off.

Seems pretty simple to weave the bags onto the belt - then I don't have to worry about it coming off. Clip on cell phones never worked well for me. I also change pants between plate an bases, so the belt comes off anyhow. If I have more than one plate in a day, then leave the bags on my plate pants (if they are clean) and switch into base pants, I have 2 belts. 

I have seen some guys put turfus (sp) or speedy dry in their bags on wet days as well.

 

I think new ideas are great, you guys that invent throat guards, I have never heard or powder coating masks, the buckets that some guys use to carry their gadgets - amazing!!

Understood Chief. There seems to be a lot of closed minded people on this forum. I had guys like him at Coronado beating me up many years ago BUT they thought differently. Would not have made comments like those to anyone.

As a poster who apparently (and unintentionally) sniped at the OP, understand that it was tongue-in-cheek but also understand that you need to grow thicker skin.

I understand (and am grateful for) your extended absence from umpiring, but IMO you will not be a successful concept designer if you can't handle a bit of internet needling from your peers. Part of a designers challenge is to overcome the "no's" on the way to success.

To give you more direct feedback, I appreciate your creativity but do not like your idea (don't confuse this with a personal attack). I would not use it and if I did the treatment I would get from my partners would be far worse than the "attacks" you are perceiving here.

Also, if you (hopefully) stay on here you will find that there's not a whole lot of enthusiasm for new ideas unless they are in protective gear. For the most part new accessory items are viewed more as gimmicks than useful improvements. You will also find out that unfortunately, softball is not always held in the same regard as baseball - that is not unique to this site though.

I encourage you to look past this thread and stay with us.

Thanks. I am used to dealing with more professional people. The young umpires I am mentoring are smart, inteligent young men. I have counceled them on the types of people that will encounter in ball BUT I have told them umpires always stick together and the only friend you will have on the ball field MAY be your partner. I survived a lot in the past few years knowing this was true. You have no idea on what thick skin is.
