Easy question for most of you guys in here and I think I know the answer, but I want to confirm it.

 

Obviously, this rule gives the umpire discretion to rule a second out if he believes the interference prevented a possible double play.  My question is, does the PU or BU make the decision to put out the runner (either R1 or R2)?

 

I'm thinking the PU does because he called the interference, but as I said, I want to make sure I'm correct on this.

Gonna need more info, but generally, the one with call responsibility will aalso be the one to see the INT and call the additional out.

I don't have my books inside so give us more info on the question. Generally whichever calls the interference decides one or two.

Its not a FPSR play, its garden variety interference on fielding a batted ball at least if I read the rule he put in his header correctly.

 

Not covered but Id leave it to the calling official or if your not sure this is one the umpires can meet on.

Bingo! A cigar for the man!

To answer the question though, whoever called the INT makes the decision and tht decision is based on what happened at 2b, NOT whether the BR was safe/out at first.

The BU can call the INT if it happens while he is watching the play but that's not usually the case.

Example: R1 is off and running. Batter strikes out and walks in front of the catcher causing interference on the attempted put out.

The words "possible double play" has me believe that you're going to almost always send R1 back to the dugout with BR unless the guy is a younger Ichiro Suzuki.

Here is the rule:

g. intentionally interferes with a throw or a thrown ball; or he hinders a fielder on his initial attempt to field a batted ball. A fielder is not protected, except from intentional contact if he misplays the ball and has to move from his original location; or his being put out is prevented by an ­illegal act by anyone connected with the team (2-21-1, 3-2-2, 3) or by the batter-runner; for runner returning to base (8-2-6); and for runner being hit by a batted ball (8-4-2k). If, in the judgment of the umpire, a runner ­including the batter-runner interferes in any way and prevents a double play anywhere, two shall be declared out (the runner who interfered and the other runner involved). If a retired runner interferes, and in the judgment of the umpire, another runner could have been put out, the umpire shall declare that runner out. If the umpire is uncertain who would have been played on, the runner closest to home shall be called out; or

1. If two fielders try to field a batted ball and the runner contacts one or both, the umpire shall decide which one is entitled to field the ball and that fielder only is entitled to protection. If a fielder drops a batted ball and contact with a runner occurs during a subsequent attempt to field the ball, the fielder has the greater responsibility for avoiding contact.

So this is not a FPSR question, it is a garden variety interference. The calling umpire is probably going to get any additional outs but a conference can be a possibility and decide what to do.
