Different topic, same game...did anyone else see the shift the Blue Jays put on when Texeira and Hafner were up to bat?

F5 about 8 feet from 2nd (on 3rd base side), F6 playing deep 2nd base, F4 playing about 40 feet into right field and F3 on the line.

 

Texeira struck out, then Hafner hit one by a diving Encarnacion, but right to the shifted 2nd baseman (believe it was Lawry (sp?)), who threw Hafner out at first!!

Foster started to come in to pivot, but recovered well and made the call about 6 feet foul with Encarnacion coming across the bag into foul territory?

Talk about a rare call. Would also make for an interesting IFF!

The Jays' defensive shifts are courtesy of Brian Butterfield, best infield coach in the game and the only piece of the John Farrell 'dream job' saga / mutiny that Toronti wishes they still had.

 

Lawrie is F5. They move him into short RF and leave F6 and F4 relatively close to their original positions so that only one infielder would be throwing with a substantially different angle than "normal" instead of all 3 of them with your 'standard' shift. So that putout went 3-5-3, as the ball originally glanced off Encarnacion's mitt.

 

Apparently, according to something said on a sports network up here, the Jays led MLB last year with defensive outs obtained via use of a shift. Didn't know such a stat existed but there you have it.

We are talking baseball. There is a Stat for EVERYTHING!

I would have thought the Rays would have led in that Stat considering how often Madden puts them on.

Maybe the continued pointing at Foster had something to do with getting thrown out.  Just maybe.
