I don't know about Jeff M or Jeff C, but I thought that the SEMUC clinic was FANTASTIC.

Instructors were top notch for the price. Under the student discount offered, I paid $110 to attend. I got two days of extensive instruction from multiple minor league and Division I-III college umpires. I even had a session and a little one on one with James Hoye.

I met both Jeff's (a couple pictures were taken, not sure who has them though), as well as Jim Kirk. All are great guys, pleasure to meet them.

I was in the "1-5 years experience" group, and it was very diverse. There were the "know it all"'s, the really good, the average, and then there were even two kids, a 13 year old and a 16 year old! To their credit (especially the 13 year old), they really did work their asses off with the rest of us, and there was notable improvement. One instructor even planned on having a side presentation with just those two, thinking what we were about to do was over their heads, but they quickly proved themselves able and joined the rest of us.

James Hoye kind of took the 13 year old under his wing, really helping him out, and by the end, we were teasing Hoye, calling the kid his son. He played right along with a "That's my boy!!" comment after a good rotation by the kid. The kid loved it too, and told me at the end he wanted to be just like Hoye. It was pretty funny seeing the 13 year old kid standing behind the high school catcher, who is sitting on a ball bucket, and only coming to a head higher than him.

The ONLY real thing I'd say could use improvement was the fieldhouse facilities. While I understand the limitations given to them by it being February in Michigan, a larger "field" was needed. We were trying to do 90 ft. mechanics and rotations on a 60 ft. diamond, and it did make it tougher to visualize.

All in all, I feel much better prepared and ready to take what comes at me as I move into umpiring high school ball.

I forgot to mention the two best quotes of the camp I heard...

One umpire (who would fall into the very good category) was in B with an R1... The ball goes and hits R1 in the ankle between 1st and 2nd... U1 yells out "Foul ball!" with hands up. He instantly joined in with the line of umpire in laughing at himself. Even the instructors had to laugh at that one.

Second was with a younger umpire on the bases in B... Instructor who is "pitching" does a double set... Base ump calls "Time!". Instructor says "Why??"... U1: "I'm preeeettty sure you can't do that."

Hey Matt!

I have a picture!  It's attached!

I must follow on Matt's heals here and say he's 100% correct.   The camp was great, the instructors were knowledgable, stearn but supportive ... even an old dog like me learned new tricks! :D  This being my first real clinic really opened my eyes to why everyone on this forum HIGHLY RECOMMENDS them!   And now, I WILL BE one of those guys also!

The other great thing this weekend was meeting Jim Kirk from Ump-Attire.  No wonder Ump-Attire does so well, and it's obvious that Jim's the driving force behind their customer service!  Great guy and a pleasure to meet, ....finally!

Attached is a shot of U_E's own Jeff C., myself, and mjr_2013 ....(thanks to Jim Kirk who took this shot) ................and also, a shot of me with James Hoye after our last session yesterday ......

I was at the SEMUC umpire camp in February. It is a great camp! I wonder if I saw any of you there. Which group were you in?

Yep, 6 straight.  My assignor likes to see us attend camps, clinics and this is the only one that is close enough for me to afford.  Still a great camp though.
