I Sucked

Worked the bases at a JV game today. First game on the bases this year. And it showed. I Sucked. Had at least 3 plays that I have no clue if i got them right or not. Normally i know if i had them right or wrong.

Had no real arguments other than "Come on Blue"

It didn't help that my partner sucked worse than me. From A I went out on a trouble ball to right field near the line. It was dropped. I signal "No Catch" I turn around to see the play and BR is rounding 2nd. I look at PU and he is standing behind the catcher looking down at his feet. He did other things that were ticking me off,

It happens. I'm sure you'll take what you learned and apply it to the next game. As your punishement for sucking, you must stare are your avatar for one hour.

Hopefully you were able to discuss postgame with your partner, sometimes that helps. I'd be more concerned with him hanging you out to dry on the trouble ball than a couple kicked calls.

I showed up about an hour before the game. He said he would be there also. Well he didn't show till 30 min left and that is fine but he forgot his uniform at the House. So he had to go get it. Fortunately he didn't live far. showed up 15 min before game. We had a short pre-game due to lack of time.

Even though we discussed rotations he not once moved from behind the plate. On fly balls to the outfield where I had to pivot I never heard him say "catch" or "out" so I was running all over unnecessarily.

I never heard him give out the count on the batter. He seemed confused about substitutions. Spent a lot of time talking with the scorekeeper.

After the game on the way back to the car he said Good Game and that in his "28 years of Umpiring" I hustled around the field as well as anybody he ever worked with.

I was so ticked that I just got in my car and left.

I have never complained about an Umpire to an Assignor but I may have to give him a call today. :rantoff:

Hard to have a postgame with somebody that isn't there. He sounds like he has 28 aniversities of his first year. As far as your base job, why do you think you were missing calls, too quick, bad angles or worried about your nonexistant partner? Whatevr it was try to figure it out and improve next time. Smetimes it's as simple as you were ttense because your partner was so late getting there and played lawn ornament all game. Was his zone any good?

I know its hard to see the Zone from the field but you can usually tell if they are at least close. Well, the first couple of innings the zone looked great but then the wheels came off.

Missed several that were obviously High. Then called a couple in the dirt strikes. Then a few that looked like strikes to me he called balls. He was very inconsistent.

I feel much better tonight. Had the plate and I was in the Zone. Never heard any chirping at all, no missed calls. Was all over the place in the right positions.

Great feeling.

My partner was a kid that has never Umpired before until this season and he did a great job. Some very close calls he got correct.

I wish there had been an evaluator there tonight.

It doesn't get any easier. Wait until your first game is a D1 or D2 game. Learn from it. Chalk it up to experience.

On the Arbiter, you are able to evaluate your partner, and it reaches the assignor. I understand you wish you had an evaluator there for you, but if you hadn't thought about it (or if your arbiter doesn't have that feature) maybe you can let the assignor know the young pup did a great job.
