I was Umpiring Adult Men's Recreational league slow pitch softball.

I was the plate Umpire on Field 3

During change of players between innings in the bottom of the 5th Inning, I heard yelling and F bombs from the field next to mine Field 2

I looked over at field 2 to see a Adult player, yelling less than 2 inches from the face of The field Umpire and it looked like he was threatening him and getting ready to fight.

Nobody was assisting the field Umpire

I quickly called time on my game told the field Umpire to hold a min, that there was trouble on field 2 and I went over to assist.

The game on field 2 was stopped and I walked over to the first base dugout which held the still yelling ejected player.

I DID NOT EVEN NEED TO SAY ANYTHING. OR TOUCH A PLAYER The yelling was over and the player was ejected.

I walked behind the guy being ejected and he yelled a bit more at the field Umpire from the scorekeepers table.

In less than 3 min When I got back to my field when both the score keeper and fans belittled me for assisting another Umpire.

Should you ever leave your field to assist another Umpire team even if a fight has not started yet ?

Btw I am 52 years old but I am 6'5 330 pounds

Your big monster a$$ walking on the field is more than enough deterrant! I know I'd damn sure tighten up. :)

If it's going to get physicall or dangerous, get over there. If not, you might be undermining that umpire.

That said, your umpire is in the right place and anyone who gives you SH*# for it (other than the offended umpire) is a RAT or a dick.

This is reason number 1,001 not to do adult slow pitch softball: everyone is just looking for an excuse to bitch at the umpire. I'm sure there is a baseball league in your area that would love a good umpire like you.

I have no idea what slow pitch umps wear. I refuse to call it. I could probably get 75+ games a year, but I won't do it. I don't like calling ANY softball, but I occasionally will fill in for a friend who is short a man. I'm a baseball umpire.

Why ask about the bag ?

I am a softball Umpire, but I am pretty sure I know what Ice Hockey Referees Wear.

I was curious if you were wearing a ball bag on the bases :fuel: I fill in for FP. I refuse to do SP. I will have upwards of 250 BASEBALL games this year. >10 softball. You said something about BIG 12 UIC not hiring based on our baseball mechanics. I'll email you a pic of me calling University of Alabama BASEBALL when they start fall games.

Why do people feel the need to jump right out with criticism? Why is pointing out (incorrectly) a ball bag on the bases SO important that you have to call the guy out on it? Recently, IMO, the forums have take a turn towards sniping and nastiness that we've avoided in the past

Recently, IMO, the forums have take a turn towards sniping and nastiness that we've avoided in the past

Not really. Most of what you have seen is directly attributable to the arrival of one particular person.

Not really. Most of what you have seen is directly attributable to the arrival of one particular person.

I notice that when an off-handed comment was made it put them on the defensive with their hackles up. They circled the wagons and now feel they must defend EVERYTHING.

What used to be good natured, funny criticism that noone got upset. Now it's to your foxholes on full alert.

It was a simple question. Why the bag on the bases? Simple answer, he was working SP so you don't wear gear. Heck, some FP guys wear very little. SP guys, at least in my area, wear no gear, nor do the catchers.

Sam - I would NOT leave my field to assist a fellow ump on another field. Now, I may go as far to STOP my game, take out my cellphone & call 9-1-1, but that would be the extent of it. If you're going to wear the blue, you've got to be able to handle your own battles.
