I work in Kentucky, and while it is not the "deep south" it gets plenty hot and humid here. I did a double-header on Wednesday when it was over 100 here with my new MVP2500 HSM and it was no different heat-wise then when I wore my traditional mask. So there is a southern point of view on the HSM and heat.

As a bald guy that sweats a lot, I have no interest in the bucket. I tan very, very easily and I would have strange stripes all over my head, plus I wear glasses and I would imagine the fogging problem would be worse. Another thing is it will ring the devil out of your ears on a hit. Then to finish it off, it looks ugly on an umpire.

You are nowhere close to the coast. Believe me, when it is that hot and that humid it makes a difference. I walked outside this afternoon on the way to my game and you could see the air. 100 degrees with a high humidity at 6:00 is not good.

I just looked at my mask. It is a "Diamond Dmf -PRO" Is this a good mask or do I need to upgrade? It is light and I have taken some very hard shots and it has held up. I was thinking about buying new equipment next year and keeping these as a back-up. My chest protector and shin guards are Wilson brand with the MLB logo on them and have a set of extra pads that I can put on the arms that hang to the elbow (I do not use them) That is what is good about this sight. I am pretty much just a country boy who relies on others good information. I have not had problems with the mask or pads but it only takes one shot. I am not keeping track but I have to be coming up on 200 games umpired this year.

Talk about the heat. We hit 104 on Sunday and 107 on Monday. I can not tell you about the humidity but I can tell you it was dang hot. I was umpiring 12 year olds Sunday and the guy who was supposed to be my partner took his wife to the ER two hours before game time. They replaced him with a guy who had lent his equipment to his son. I stayed in my plate equipment from 2 PM untill 9:30 Sunday night. I read a post on here one day where a guy said he would not take water on the field with him. Not only did I take water, I had a cooler full of water, dill pickles and pickle juice along with some sport drinks and a wet towel. I had to done three games on Fri and Sat, Four on Sunday and came back for two on Mon, Tues and Wed. Brutal heat.

Worked w/ a guy yesterday who didn't wear a cap under his traditional mask.

We were at out plate meeting and I asked him if he forgot his cap. He stated, "nope, I don't wear a cap when I work the plate." :no:

^ saw that a lot in the 2A state tournament this year in St. Cloud..All 3 plate umps on Putz wore HSM with no cap under it. Sort of bothered me until I remembered they were the ones on the field getting to ump the state tourny.

This speaking of the helmet not being hot is coming from people all over the northern part of North America (for the most part). Try wearing one down here in Louisiana heat. 102 degrees, 100% humidity. It's all dry heat. You step outside, and within 3 minutes you are soaking wet in sweat, and you haven't even done anything yet. I'm sure the helmet has it's advantages, but you will not convince me to wear one in this awful Louisiana heat. Sorry!

I'm laughing at one aspect of this post -- you say 100% humidity and then say it's all dry heat.

Actually, if it's 102 degrees, the humidity simply can't be really high from a percentage standpoint -- the heat index would be near 200 degrees and the atmosphere wouldn't be able to sustain those levels. If the temperature is 100 degrees, even a 50% relative humidity brings the heat index up to 118 degrees.

Regarding the helmet - it's not the heat for me -- it's the sweat not being kept off my eyes that drives me crazy when it's really hot. Still, I like the bucket.

The problem with the helmet is still a philosophical one. I've heard of D1 conference assignors that forbid its use. I've heard stories of umpires switching back to a traditional mask in the minor leagues because they didn't want to run the risk of an evaluator who dislikes the bucket. One regular callup to MLB switched back at the Major League level to a traditional mask.

I have both and this week I traveled to umpire and I brought the traditional mask. It fits better in my bag. :)

I hate the look of a bucket but to prohibit it's use is stupid. Whatever makes the guy comfortable behind the plate should be OK. I tell my guys either is fine.

Dry heat has low humidity. Listen, once it gets to over 90 degrees in the sun shine, it is just hot, hotter and hottest. Let's not get into a pissing contest. That said, I have a couple hats I wear in warmer weather, and ones I wear in cooler weather. But I always keep my mask facing forward.
