Let me preface this with the phrase "umpire brainfart" 2 man rotation. R1, long fly to left center field, trouble ball as the center fielder is tracking it pretty well however ball is uncaught. goes to fence, R1 is around third and scoring. PU has come up line for R1's advance to third. Who has the plate? My PU says I should rotate from C, after I release R1 to third. My thought was PU should come half way to third take play at plate because i have responsiblilty for BR coming into 2B. What are your thoughts oh sages of mechanics land.

You are correct in your thought process and mechanics.

The call at home is the responsibility of the PU He does rotate up towards thirds in case of a play, but then he has the responsibility to double back and get the play at home. You then have the responsibility for the Batter/runner.

Proper rotation is for the PU to start up to third an read the play . If your instinct says there's gonna be a play at 3 rd keep going up the line and take the play . If you an read no play at 3rd or a play at home then the PU needs to stay home.

The only time I can think of the BU rotating back to home plate is with no one on and the BU goes out on a trouble ball . The PU should take the runner all the way to third and the bu rotates back to take the play at Home.

TY,

Your PU needs to familiarize himself with the concept of "reading the play".

Once he sees the ball get past the outfielder and it's obvious there will be no play on the R1 at 3B, he yells "TY, I'm going home!" and retreats to the plate area to set up for a possible play at home.

Agree with JM. A little communication goes a long way.

lol, earlier game he and i worked, with me on plate. he was giving me grief because i wasnt hanging out at third. I told him I 'adjudged there would not be a play at first and decided to hang out at the plate." for the play. He 'liked' the word adjudged. ha ha

I have noticed this past weekend that the guys that umpire here, me included at times, have darn litle verbal communication. even when this guy as PU was coming up to third I never heard him say anything to that effect. That is going to be my focus this next week, to be more vocal.

guyinaredhat is exactly correct. As Evans students are well aware, you come up to the library, read the play and then go to third or return to home for the play. Your PU is dead wrong, the BU only goes home for one call and one call only, after he returns from going out from A. There is one runner to deal with so it works. With multiple runners there is no way for the BU to release to home, he has the BR to deal with.

Some associations even say that if BU goes out then PU has all the bases.

Just out of curiosity, how long has the PU been calling? It has no relevance to this but I am "ajudging" something in my mind.

Ask him next time, when there is a throw back to second if you went home if he is going to try and make the call from where he is at. Then just chuckle a little when he answers.

One thing that absolutely can not be taught is game instinct. It is aquired and some guys have a hard time getting it even if they have called a long time.

Keep up the good work and doing things the right way.

A simple "I got him" would be enough out of the PU or a signal before the batter gets into the box to make sure both of you are on the same page. Communication is key!!!!

he does.. if the BU can't get back in time.

I always hear, "once you go out, stay out." Personally, I pregame that if I go out, I'm coming back to help if needed. I will pick up the dish and be on hand in case of a pickle.

Go out stay out is for three-man and above. I'm coming back to the plate if I can make it. Of course I have not had a play at the plate on this rotation in almost 20seasons... but it will happen damn it!

Also only rundown I'm going to get involved in on this play is one that happens between third and home.

Go out and stay out in two man means don't rim the infield. Don't partially go out and make the call in right, then try to get to second for the call there. If you go out, stay there until the ball is released by the outfielder, then beat feet for home.

I was wondering about a rundown if you go out from "A". You bust it back to the 45' line and watch the play develpo. Never seen it happen, but if BR gets pickled between 2b and 3b, I would think I need to help instead of HP taking it all. My instincts tell me no, be ready to call at the plate. what does JE max book say? I don't have a copy.

I've had one (1) call at the dish in this rotation. New partner, I go out and bust it back. BR headed to 3b, HP has him all the way. Throw gets by F5, BR headed home. Eye contact with HP and he relaxes. Whacker, but BR is under the tag. Afterwards, HP told me he was worried about getting there, saw me, and relaxed. We had an instant bond. It was cool.
