a) an empty-glove tag with ball secure and firm in hand,

B) a bare-handed tag with ball secure and firm in glove;

what do you got?

Sounds like the umpires called a conference without a request by a coach. I would have a pretty terse discussion if that is what happened.

To add a new twist to this question, runner slides 2 inches short of bag, fielder fumbles ball, picks it up with open hand and applies the tag with the open hand pinned to the outside of a closed glove, what do you have?
