Was wondering why my knees hurt so much after a game and wondered how far I move during a game. Did a full 7 inning hs soph game today. From the time walking from my car to the field to returning directly to car after the game I took 2272 steps. Thats is a mile plus. Just worth passing on for those that don't think umpiring is an athletic pursuit.

That was going to be my observation. I haven't worn a pedometer on one of my basketball or football games but I'm sure it doesn't come close.

I was think about this very subject over the weekend, and thought it would be interesting to wear a pedometer for a weekend and see how far I have ran.

Football ref's average about 5-7 miles

Basketball ref's avrage about 3-4 miles

Soccer ref's average about 5-7 miles

Well, a wing might average 5-7 miles. I've had a couple umpires (football) that may not have averaged 500 yds. :)

Depends how often teams are scoring. In some games the umpire may be doing the most work by spotting the ball.

WHew - a whole mile plus over about an hour and a half. Thats quite some pace.

And for basketball if you run the whole 84 feet every 20 seconds over the 32 minutes then you run about a mile and a half. You could add some extra in there for reporting fouls ect but its nowhere near the 3-4 miles someone else posted.
