Anyhow ...

In brushing through Rule 3...ART. 1 is ok with me until:

Projected substituions are not allowed. In each of the following situations, the ball is declared live by the UIC. Should there be no announcement of substitutions, a substitute has entered teh game when the ball is live and:

a. a runner takes the lace of a runner he has replaced

b. a pitcher takes his place on teh pitcher's plate,

c. a fielder reaches the position usually occupoed by teh fielder he has replaced, or

d. a batter takes his place in the batters box

NOW ....

Is this just describing subs WITHOUT an announcement from the UIC ?? Is that all this is saying ?

It is describing subs without any notification to UIC. Little tommy sub comes up to bat in the 4th without telling anyone. Defensive team claims BOO. As long a little tommy is really a sub (as opposed to already in the game and batting BOO, or a starter re-entering in wrong batting order), then he is an unannounced sub, and legal. The best way to say it I guess, is the sub is a legal sub and the substituting team did everything legal except tell UIC

Announcing subs to you is really a courtesy so that you can convey to the other team/official scorer and avoid confusion. All the FED rule does is legalize them if they don't announce it to you.

That's a good description for FED - "legalized confusion" (only if you use other rule sets frequently - if all you call is FED, then it makes perfect sense)

Also, Jeff, FYI, FED rules are referenced with dashes and casebook plays with dots. So in this case, it'd be 3-1-1 a,b,c,d :)

So if they don't report, or coach doesn't let you know, the rule is there to help the umpire...well coach he was:

c. a fielder reaches the position usually occupoed by teh fielder he has replaced, or

d. a batter takes his place in the batters box

So at this point, he's in the game.
