anyhow, i'm PU tonight, my partner dumps a coach who argued a balk situation with him after some exchange between the two, pitcher stepped off the back of the rubber, R2 was moving to 3rd base, and got gunned by a week.... Manager had a cow, said the kid balked... he didn't...

anyhow, they come into the field after that 3rd out... pitcher (who got got gunned at 3rd) throws a pitch in tight, I ball it, another one, curveball, close, but misses slightly high, rolls his eyes gives me the googly eyes etc... I blow it off (ok so I'm in a good mood tonight), ... next pitch, he plunks the hitter.... I saw the look in his eye.... he knows that I know etc etc... I dump him... now here's what shocked me slightly.... coach raises hell (different coach from who got dumped in previous inning)... not all over the kid for bad sportsmanship... the kid just let one get loose, no way he did it purposely... because, umm... he's a REALLY good kid... ya ya ya (mind you, the kid knew I cold busted him, walked off without a complaint, at this point.. they were down like 11 anyhow and he got shelled in the two previous innings)

This coach could care less about the obvious bad sportsmanship... that EVERYONE in the complex saw and knew exactly what went on, he was pissed because I ran the kid for "no good reason".

after all these years I'm still amazed that parent's let their kids play for these clowns.

Good thing you added that "JK"!!!! You might have started a riot!

There are morons in every avocation. The morons that have chosen umpiring usually don't end up lasting very long. It doesn't take long for word to get back to assignors, and they find themselves getting far fewer games and the ones they do get are generally lower quality games. Many eventually give it up. Coaches, on the other hand, can be morons for years and years without consequence as long as they win ball games.

What was his argument about this being a balk, I don't get it? I guess you could argue that he made the move to second by stepping off the mound so he had to go to second(even though that clearly isn't the rule)? I don't get this. maybe I'm not bright(My wife would say that there is a strong chance.)

My wife and I are expecting our first son in about a month(we both have six year old girls from different marriages) and that is the one thing I have learned from umping for 5 years, make sure whoever is incharge of teaching your kids something has a freaking clue. I don't care if it is baseball, dancing, or knitting, make sure they know what they are doing. That is why I like doing legion and high school over everything else. Because they are programs you get coaches who know what's going on.

There really are some umpires that are, but I was just joking about it here. Most here seem to pretty level headed and knowledgeable. There are a few that have a chip on their shoulder toward coaches, but that happens when you generalize. I guess my having been an ump before I was a coach helped me understand what umpires go through. I don't argue or question calls unless it is a horrible call, a call that was something I can question and possibly buy a call with later, or a call that was made against the rules. When I do argue it always starts off with, "What did you see?" or some type of question. I can't argue if the umpire says he caught the ball first or beat it to the bag. I guess I just kind of ask a question to see why it was called like it was and the response determines whether I pursue. The umps that coach my games usually know and we get along fine... Well, except for one that I refuse to even discuss anything with because he always seems to come up to me and try and argue with me.
