Hmmm...

Well, IMO, Kendall sounds pretty mealy-mouthed in this interview. He never says exactly what he was saying to Estabrook, he just repeats that "I was talking to him", but never says WHAT he was saying.

That doesn't excuse Estabrook's actions, but it sure would be nice to know exactly what it was that Kendall was saying, so that we have some perspective on the issue.

And let's not forget the inequality of the media exposure here... the players and managers get to sound off to the mics/cameras, while the umpires (especially a call-up) don't get that advantage, so we don't really get the whole story here.

But Kendall certainly sounds mush-mouthed in this interview, so it makes me wonder if he wasn't going over the top in his words with Estabrook.

I was at the game he did behind the plate last sunday in Boston. It was obvious that he was having some issues with close pitches in that game too by the reactions of both pitchers.

There is no excuse or reason for the reaction that is in this clip.

As long as he is consistent both ways, it is fair.

:yippie:

Just because a multi-millionaire pitcher is complaining he's not getting the close calls he is "supposed" to get doesn't mean the umpire is wrong. His strike zone is just slightly different than another's. It's called judgement for a reason. Pro sports should not be influenced by crybaby multimillion dollar players. :)

Ok. I'm off the soapbox.

Estabrook was wrong in his approach to the situation. If the dialogue had been going on, and Kendall crossed the line,. No need to get down in front of him and chastise him like a child. But he didn't send Kendall to the showers, so it makes you wonder. I can't pass too much judgement as we have only heard 1 side of a 3 sided story. Actually we have only heard 1/2 of 1 side of the story. Since Kendall didn't come out and tell us what was said, I tend to believe he was out of line. Like he's pleading the 5th. So, both parties are probably equally responsible. Everyone makes mistakes, Estabrook's just happened to be on national TV.

Hmmm, seems like there was a happening years ago in which Mr. Crawford was the plate umpire. It involved a knuckleball pitcher, probably Phil or Joe Niekro and the catcher. Those who can remember this from way back in the day, could probably help me out here and bring us up to speed on that happening. Or, for those that go to camps where Mr. Crawford helps out, maybe you could ask him about this???
