If I made $350,000 for nine months' work, I'd have 78 pairs of polywools to rotate.

MiLB umpires don't make that much change.

Plus, MLB umpires don't pay for their clothes.

And, for crying out loud, if I was a minor league umpire eating macaroni and cheese and peanut butter sandwiches, then no, I wouldn't dry clean them, I'd be laundering them in the coin-operated machine in the back of my Motel 6 like all the others.

But I don't need to take that short-cut, so I care for them properly. It's not the big deal that it's being made out to be. If laundering them is your way out, fine; knock yourself out. But it doesn't mean it's the best way to care for them.

At the higher levels of MiLB, they have clubhouse guys that do their laundry for them while they are working a series.

The MiLB guys only get something like one pair of plate pants, one pair of base pants, two shirts, and a couple of hats per season. I'm pretty sure they have to buy the rest if they want extra stuff. Now that I think about it, they may only get pants every two years.

Usually what the minor league guys do is wear their slack for several days without washing. The fields they work a well groomed and the slacks stay clean. They will dry clean them every so often but mainly they get washed. Because of the permanent crease they stay pretty crisp between washings. I dry clean mine between 3-4 washes. Hope this help.

Do what you want, and/or, what works for you.

Kevin recommends the proper method of cleaning these pants per the manufacturer. Others are talking about proven methods they've discovered themselves, along with proof of their method working successfully, and still having their PWs looking like new.

On the polywool subject, I saw the Ump Attire polywools at the Chicago NCAA meeting on Saturday. They are indeed exactly like the Honig's version, but with the adjusters.

Also:

- The Smitty version of the Thermabase insulated jackets are nice, but probably not quite as thick as the Majestic jacket. I would still like to have one of the black/white ones though. Smitty also has a version of the convertible jacket out now and it is nice too.

- The NB plate shoes aren't bad looking in person. I am going to stick with my Reeboks for one more season (This will be their third season) and get something new next year. I may go with the NBs.

- Honig's had long sleeve black shirts for $10. I was stupid not to get one.
