Banger at 2nd trying to get a double play. Runner comes in high I'm in B, R1 never slides but due to the play I have make a quick pivot for the play at 1st. Last night I had the plate (Playoff Series) and called a kid out at 1st due to R1 never getting out of the way of the throw or sliding. So the coach comes out and talks to U1 who proceeds to tell the DC that its my call to make. Now I have the DC on my butt and questioning my abilities. Feel free to tell me what you think!

I think that, on a DP, the BU has the tag a 2nd, and it's the PU that has the responsibilty to "clean up" the play at 2nd (illegal slide, INT, etc), while the BU makes the pivot for the throw to 1st....

Yes. Our organization trains us, as PU, to come out to the 3B-side and watch the action at 2B. As BU, we follow the ball. If F4 or F6 never release the ball, INT is called by BU -- their eyes should be there. If the ball is thrown, PU will most-likely call INT.

I wonder (and I'm not picking on yawetag or his organization, because what he says seems to be common training) whether PU would be better served to come out to the first base side (after clearing F2 and the BR) to make this call.

It would be easier to get an angle on a slide out of the direct line between the bases, it would put PU in a better position to rule on a pulled foot or swipe tag (assuming there's time to look after evaluating the slide), and would put PU in a better postion to follow the ball / rule on an overthrow.

If you go first base side and for whatever reason R1 advances towards 3rd you could be in a bind if u2 is unable to get into position.

We give that play to U1 in all situation anyway. I suppose if PU is responsible for R1 on the second play at third, maybe PU has to cheat more toward third. BUt, it still seems to me to be positioning yourself for a play that mostly won't happen at the expense of a play that will happen.

The 2nd play at 3B is the responsibility of the base umpire.

I'm quite sure we've covered this before in this forum.

I'm not arguing that fact at all, but lets face it weird things happen and sometimes our partners fail to fulfill their responsibilities.

You know it, brother.

I wish you could have been there tonight to see the erroneous rotations I was getting from my partner at home plate. Up to 3B when he shouldn't, and 10 feet off home plate when he should have been. Bass ackwards on almost every one of them. :(

The PU goes to the third base side to get a better look. By the time he turns the play at first is likely to be done. He is not expected to give any help at first nor is it likely he could.

I'll have to check on the field the next I'm there, but I think 3B-side would be a better angle on illegal slides, especially ones that go past the base.
