Can you answer this .....here's a pro who does a great job, calls a great game like you say, ...answer me this....why can't he take off his mask without his hat coming with it?? I just don't understand it .....dont' get me wrong, I like Jim Wolf ...but I don't understand the hat thingy? :)

Taking your hat off is fine .... he takes it off with his mask also, it's as if he can't take his mask off without his hat coming off as well. Rapuano does the same thing.....

It doesn't come off with his mask, it is a seperate operation. I take my hat whenever possible, it helps cool me off.

yep, this is something he does, all together, it is alright though.. I am sure you will not be marked down on this... maybe some of these guys are not hat guys.. 9 I like to wear a hat wherever I go anywhere)..

Yea. Along with Jeff Nelson and Tim Timmons, Wolf is one of the guys to wear a sm-edium sized shirt. In other words, they spend more time in the weight room than most so their uniforms fit differently. Athletes and fitness buffs poke fun at each other for things like this all the time IE that scene from Transformers 2

As for that whole hat thing...

When there's a delay in the action IE a between inning TV timeout, it doesn't matter - assuming you want to take your hat off, some guys like to peel off the mask and then remove their hat with a separate hand. There is a way to do that all at once. See Wolf, Rapuano, et al

The other situation when this happens is when an umpire knows the camera is going to be on them IE a play at the plate or an argument / ejection. This is an advanced mechanic that guys with "Bond hair" (you know, the hair that can withstand a near-death explosion and still remain unaltered) use so they can show off their sick flow on TV.

Pretty sure all the pro umpires know how to take a mask off without yanking the hat with it :P

I am well aware of the "schmedium" sized shirt. I have noticed that Wolf spends time working on his guns and his shirts fit accordingly.

On another note, my wife thinks Wolf is hot. I wish she'd have the same opinion of the umpire who lives with her.

I am biased toward Wolf, because he and his brother came through our PONY league and they both went to the big leagues. We also had Jeff Suppan, Conor Jackson, Mike Moustakas and Ryan Lavarnway all come through our league, but having an umpire make it is more special, I think.

I'm glad he's so cool and such a good umpire, because he's easy to like.
